Science and User Support Center Opening Thursday, 5/1

The Science and User Support Center (SUSC, Bldg. 101) will open to the 
Brookhaven Lab community — including staff, guests, facility users, visitors, 
students, educators, and contractors — on Thursday, May 1. 

The three-story, 77,000-square-foot facility offers conference and 
collaboration areas on the first floor. Office space for operations staff is 
located on the second and third floors.

Staff in Badging, Housing, and the Guest, User & Visitor Center have moved 
from the Research Support Building (Bldg. 400) and are working in SUSC.

With the Badging Office now located in SUSC, all who previously stopped at 
the trailer near the Lab's Main Gate should now travel to SUSC first — 
including staff who need a temporary badge for the day. The trailer will be 
closed. 

Additional staff will move to SUSC in the coming weeks, including members of 
Quality Management, Stakeholder Relations, and Procurement. Staff in Business 
Services and the Research Partnerships and Technology Transfer Office are 
also planning to move to SUSC. 

New traffic patterns near Main Gate: Use caution
The road spur that connects the traffic circle to the SUSC parking lots will 
open the same day. With new traffic patterns, drivers should use extra 
caution when entering and exiting the traffic circle or "roundabout" as well 
as patience for others as all get accustomed to the changes. 

New York State's Department of Motor Vehicles offers instructions on how to 
navigate a roundabout:

Please note, "When you arrive at the roundabout, yield the right-of-way to 
any pedestrians and bicyclists. You must also yield to any drivers who were 
in the roundabout before you."

Security
The SUSC lobby will be open for regular hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday 
through Friday. After hours and on weekends, it will be locked but accessible 
for staff who use their badges to swipe in at a card reader.  

Staff may access the second and third floors after swiping their badges 
during regular hours. After hours, only staff with space in SUSC or assigned 
work there can enter work areas, elevators, and stairs after swiping their 
badges for access.

Do not "piggyback," entering without swiping your badge by closely following 
someone else who does. Staff must also not allow others following behind them 
to enter without swiping their badges.  

SUSC and its parking lots are accessible from the newly opened road off the 
traffic circle. Buildings in the apartment area may only be accessed from the 
Lab site after passing through the Lab's security booths, whether traveling 
by vehicle, bicycle, or walking.
