sPHENIX discussion of the superconducting solenoid

Sorry again for the confusion about the meeting time, I've put on my 
calendar a note to send a reminder the Monday before a meeting.

Paul told us that the thermal shield tools were delayed in the shops but 
are being boxed to be sent to SLAC now; they should be there by early 
next week.  If everything goes smoothly from here, the valve box and 
solenoid could be shipped on Oct 13 or 20.  I think Mike said that the 
contract for the rest of the equipment (which can be shipped by 
conventional means) is not placed; we'll want some of that in early 2015 
so the next order of business for shipping is to get that here.

Mike showed some slides that show the schedule and budget for bringing 
the magnet here, constructing and installing a modified chimney in 
building 912, and performing a lower power test of the system.

We discussed at some length the advantages and disadvantages of testing 
with the original chimney first, and then changing to the sPHENIX 
compatible chimney.  We would like to fit the low power test into a 
period of time which is likely to end around June or July 2015 when the 
cryo plant in 912 is not needed for the ERL due to repairs on the gun. 
Right now, we think Paul has completed 90% of the design is done for the 
"final" chimney, and we have a good chance of doing the initial tests 
with that, which would save time and money over testing twice.  Don will 
check on the lengths of the new horizontal extension of the chimney to 
make sure it's compatible with all the variations of the sPHENIX HCAL 
that we are considering.

Dave showed a new drawing of the 912 floor taking into account the 
longer chimney extension.  We discussed building a support structure for 
the chimney; probably this will have to be done by CAD, since it will be 
reviewed and inspected in CAD space.

Bob Lambiase confirmed that we have a power supply appropriate for the 
low power test.  We do not believe quench protection will be necessary 
for the test.  The cryostat does not have an ASME stamp (as far as we 
can tell), and so will have to be certified for ASME equivalency (I 
think I got the terminology correct).  [After the meeting, it occurred 
to me that we might want to use the test to test the instrumentation, 
like the temperature sensors and strain gauges, so we probably do need 
some PLC work.]

Mike will present the plans for moving and testing the magnet at the 
sPHENIX Project Management Group (PMG) meeting next Tuesday, October 7 
in the Orange Room in Physics.  Roberto will make a few slides showing 
the testing schedule and costs.
