- Magnet move
The move scheduled for Monday, Nov 10 had a snag and has not taken place. The air-ride truck that came to SLAC from CAST could not safely transport the solenoid; the ground clearance was 4" when just the solenoid was loaded on it, and with the (~3k lb) valve box, the truck may have been over its maximum allowed weight.
The solenoid was unloaded, and is in the yard at SLAC. There will be a telecon with the CAST people tomorrow (Thursday) to assess the next steps.
There are several obstacles ahead on the calendar; Mike Racine will be
away from SLAC Nov 26-Dec 8, and SLAC will be shut down for Christmas for two weeks starting Dec 19. We want to avoid the solenoid arriving at BNL over the Thanksgiving weekend. CAST may have to consider a (longer) more southern route. We will have to pay SLAC for some additional rigging. Since we may not be able to ship the valve box on the same trailer as the solenoid, we may have to expedite a second PO which can cover its move and the other equipment (power supplies, quench resistor, lifting fixtures). Possible start dates are Nov 17,18 (unlikely we can get the permits updated in time, and it could mean arrival over Thanksgiving if there is any slow-down on the way); Dec 1,2 (Mike Racine could not be there); Dec 8,9 probably a good time to shoot for; Dec 15,16 is uncomfortably close to a Christmas arrival.
- Low power test
Roberto has learned that SLAC operated the solenoid in forced-flow mode, not siphon mode as the early papers said. After some discussion, it doesn't seem to make all that much difference to us; in principle, we could simplify the valve box, but it is not likely to save any time or money to do that.
David Lissauer wants to convene an internal review committee to review the low power test before we start making the modifications to the chimney. We discussed when we could do that; possibly, that could be done sometime in December, although January seems more feasible to me.
We discussed briefly what it will take to do a high power test; we agreed that next time we'll invite Wuzheng Meng to present some stress calculations.
- WBS for the magnet project beyond the LP test
Bob Lambiase gave Jim a WBS for the electrical and quench protection part of the project, and Roberto finished the cry project last week. Achim has an estimate from the ATLAS magnet mapping group to map our magnet which we can use as the mapping part of the WBS.
I propose we defer the next magnet meeting to Wednesday, Dec 3 (Nov 26 is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving).
