Hi Mike,

Below you may see the email exchange about Ray Ceruti trying to find a(nother) small leak.   Pete seems to be very worried about the HD
stuff.  Ray explained to me that they just need HD for a tiny amount to spray to it and they've done this for years.

I wonder whether you may help explain to Pete .... (so that they may allow Ray to use HD) ?

Kin

Hi Kin,

We are pumping a vacuum on the inner helium lines / system.  Since the system has been completely saturated with helium we would normally switch to using HD to perform a leak check.  Apparently this is not acceptable to use in Bldg. 912 as per Peter’s reply (below).  As a result of this decision, we are attempting to pump down on the system in hope that after a week or so the system might clean up enough to continue looking for this small leak using helium.  So far we are able to get a leak detector to only 10 -6 scale which doesn’t have enough sensitivity over the leak to find anything yet.  This leak(s) is small and will be hard to find under normal conditions using HD.  We will have to see how well it cleans up over time in our attempt to continue using helium.

Regards,

Ray

Hi Henry,

Use of HD  in 912 is not acceptable without significant work controls and review. I would suggest if ME does not work you considered He-D mixture w 2% D.

Peter, Mel,

We wanted to give you a head’s up on the leak checking being done on sphenix.  Ray has found another leak, which they are trying to locate.  There is a lot of background helium, which may not improve sufficiently with the pumping that is being done.  He is going to let it continue to pump and check again wed. am.  Should the background helium not clear up, he may want to ask again about using a small amount of HD.
