1.      Carl made a presentation about the quench detection system and the overall data acquisition system.   You may find his presentation in the above indico page or here:

https://collab.external.bnl.gov/sites/sPHENIX-Magnet/Past%20Presentations/2017-3-15%20sPHENIX%20Quench%20Detector%20Review.pptx

Among other things, Carl wanted to use (Vmeas – L dI/dt) for each of the two coils for quench detection.   This is to prevent the rare case that

both coils quench at the same time.

There is concern that dI/dt is too noisy to make this work.   But Carl pointed out that it’s doable as he’s been doing this in RHIC for more than 10 years.

From what I understand, he’s got two “tricks”.   One is his “anti-aliasing” which should get rid of a lot of noise.   And then he uses the algorithm of using

(Xn – Xn-2)/2  instead of the usual  (Xn-Xn-1)

He said that it’s possible that all the hardware can be finished by June 1st, 2017 and he could start testing whenever he’s received any components/boards

     arrived before June 1st.

Though it seems that he may need to make a few boards.  But after the meeting when I discussed with him to understand more, he really needs to make

one kind of Front-End Electronics board which may be good for 6 channels and he may need 4 of them.   He’d like to make another simple

Phase-Lock-Loop (PLL) board but he can use a board from RHIC.  Even though that RHIC PLL board may be an overkill, he can use it without building

    one for the high-field test.

     Z. Altinbas said that her quench detection “software” can be finished in May.    W. Pekrul said that his software should be finished by this Friday.

2.      The 2nd part of the meeting was about the schedule.   Before the meeting, J. Mills, D. Phillips, J. Hock and I had discussion about speeding up the steel making, mainly by using OverTime (OT) and doing works in parallel.   C. Folz will go to talk with Stephanie LaMontagne about trying to start using OT for the technicians starting this Sat.

Morever, Jon Hock has agreed to make up a detailed schedule in Microsoft Project about the steel process and send it to us this Friday.   Then, I’ve planned to ask Paul Orfin (who doesn’t have Microsoft Project) to work with me with Microsoft Project to add the Cryo procedures.   I was hoping that that was the end of it but J. Mills insisted on including schedules from Mike Anerella and C. Schultheiss for their relevant parts in the Microsoft Project.

As I said in the meeting, practically, I expect that by next Tuesday, we have the steel making and Cryo portion.   C. Schultheiss told me after the meeting that he’ll be taking vacations from tomorrow and will come back next Tuesday (Mar. 21).

3.      After the meeting, Carl Schultheiss got together with Piyush Joshi and Sonny Dimaiuta and eliminated two voltage taps which we (Carl, and P.

Giannotti and I made up last week).  So now the total no. of new voltages are 10.    Piyush drew manually a piece of “schematics” in the room that

they’re making the Cryo Extension.   Carl made a copy and he’s going to draw it in electronic format and adjusted the necessary numbering.
