sPHENIX discussion of the superconducting solenoid

1. Before we went into the main topic of valve-box removal, Tom Tallerico informed us that he's going to purchase some cables connecting the Valvebox with the 3'x3'x1'

junction-box.  [  There will be the CLTS cards --- which we've got from Pasquale and copied 30 times or so --- between the Valvebox and the junction box.  The CLTS cards convert

resistance to current of 4 to 20 mA.  ]

 

After Jim urged, Tom is going to confirm with Jon Hock that Jon has allocated space for the junction-box in his design.

 

1.1   Carl Schultheiss discussed with Tom whether they'd would like to share the junction box.  But since Carl's voltages may be >300 V, they decided that they wouldn't share it.   So, Carl has to

build a panel similar to Sonny's half-rack that we used in the High-Field Test.

 

1.2   In addition, Carl and Dave Phillips also need to find the (closest) place where Carl can put his rack of quench-detectors (etc.).

 

 

2. People asked again about the possibility that the Magnet may need to be moved in 1008.   It’s looks more and more likely that we don’t need to move as we now have a sliding door and we don’t need to move the Magnet to create space for magnet calibration.
   
   
3. Dave Phillips estimated that we’ll have riggers to move the Valvebox Box in the week of Jan. 21 or Jan. 28 (more likely for the latter week).  It looks like that the riggers will set up the concrete blocks just before they move the Valvebox.  A few things were discussed.
   
   --- Frank Toldo (or other Carter Biggs’ tech) will be there to collect the components that Ray Karol take apart.

--- After the Valvebox is moved, electricians need to disconnect power and carpenters need to take away the wooden platform.

--- Then, the riggers need to come again to move the roof just below the Valvebox and then Ray can open the doghouse underneath.
--- Ideally, Dave said that, all the above should be finished around/before Feb. 19 and then Carl and others can check the electrical connections afterwards.  Carl may be busy at least in the early part of Feb.

 

4. Paul Orfin mentioned again about the issue of flushing the Magnet with dry nitrogen.  I suggested what Roberto said that we just refill the dry nitrogen every half a year or so.  Paul said that we probably need to measure the pressure to make sure that there is no leak.  In principle, we can just measure the pressure a few days after the first seal and if there is no major leak, we can measure/monitor the pressure/leak in longer gap of time.
   
   
5. John Haggerty asked about the water-cooled bus requirement.  Carl said that he’s got the nos. and he’s promised to pass the information to us.
   
   
6. Dave Phillips told us that currently, there is no plan to move the Magnet in 912 before we move it to 1008.  But this can change in the future if other research programs may need space in 912.
