Attendees: K. Yip, P. Joshi, J. Haggerty, M. Anerella, C. Schultheiss, W. Pekrul, A. Marone

In-between the 2.X review practice talk, we squeezed in a Magnet Mapping meeting today starting at about 1:30 pm and ended around 2:10 pm.

John Haggerty’s old presentation, CERN estimate, P. Joshi’s spreadsheet and a BELLE magnet mapping PDF file may be found at the meeting page:

https://indico.bnl.gov/event/6844/

We first discussed about the CERN quote (https://indico.bnl.gov/event/6844/sessions/3427/attachments/24841/36938/Cylmapbnl.pdf)

that John Haggerty obtained from CERN in 2015 and was recently reconfirmed.   Their price is about $64K if I add the shipping and travel.   Piyush Joshi

was a bit suspicious about the shipping cost of $2000 only, though John Haggerty said that they had done this before --- they shipped the equipment for

mapping the STAR magnet ~20 years ago.   John reminded me that in S. Trentalange’s (of STAR) reply to my questions, he told us that the total value of the

contract at that time was $50K, which is not too far away from the present $64K after 20 years (!).

Then, we discussed about the cost estimate that Piyush and his colleagues have made for doing the magnet mapping for sPHENIX Magnet :

https://indico.bnl.gov/event/6844/sessions/3427/attachments/24841/36967/Measurement_cost_estimate.xlsx

The total is about $322K (including materials and labor).  Andrew Marone drew us a picture what he had in mind on the white board.  Piyush’s estimate

includes 100 MV2 magnetic sensor.    We discussed how the mapping can/will be done.  Mike Anerella provided us another presentation from magnet

mapping for the Belle II experiment : https://indico.bnl.gov/event/6844/sessions/3427/attachments/24841/36966/BNL_AiqiangGuo_2017_Nov_V1_p23-31.pdf

Obviously, $322K is not something that we have budgeted.  Mike said that it’s difficult to get program development funding for 2020 (though not impossible)

but we may use sPHENIX funding first and then get the program development funding for 2021.

John Haggerty said that the next step for him (as he’s the L3 manager for magnet mapping) is to

  • discuss with sPHENIX management,
  • pursue funding possibilities, and
  • provide CERN with more details to obtain probably more realistic contract cost.

Compatible with P6 ( “Engineering and Design Complete” is to be completed on Dec. 31, 2019), John thinks that it’d be good if we can decide on whether

we’ll just use the CERN mapping group or work with Piyush, Mike et. al.  in the Superconducting Magnet Division to do the mapping around Jan. 2020

such that we have about 2.5 years’ time to produce the mapping equipment.
