Ed, Kin,
- Leave the tie rods tight and the heat shield restraints installed until the magnet is on the cradle in 1008.
- After the magnet is moved from the iron, install the valve box extension supports (Ray Ceruti has these) before installing the “dog house” panels to seal for nitrogen purge.
- Do not move the valve box until lead supports are installed at the top (requires removing the two access panels) and at the bottom (requires removing the temporary can). These are items that have been misplaced
and we have been asked to fabricate replacements.

We do not need to have a tight seal, with regards to pressure.
We will try to tape bags around the restraints ends to keep a moisture barrier around them.
Then refresh the dry nitrogen once in a while.
Bottom line is to keep moisture away from the internal electrical connectors.

In addition to the detailed replies below and Ray also replied to me privately :
“The L2 will certainly leak to some small degree but certainly won’t hold pressure or vacuum. If all are OK with this it would be no problem.”
I think Ray meant N2 (dry nitrogen), not L2.
If everybody is OK with N2 leaking a bit, we don’t need to replace the heat shield restraints ?!
Roberto, do you think we can at least try this (without removing heat shield restraints) and see how bad the leak is and how long before we’ll need to do the purging again ?
That’s what you implied the last few times that we discussed about this ?? Or you think we should remove heat shield restraints to have the original discs for better seal ?
( Obviously, the latter implies more work as we’ll need to put back the heat shield restraints again in late 2021 before transportation. )

Hi All,
2) the doors will have to be installed, the heat shield restraints would have to be removed to replace the original discs that have O ring seals in order to hold any L2 pressure.
3) I don’t see any reason that the tightened cold mass rods will effect purging if N2. (As long as you don’t cool down)
4) Heat shield supports won’t hold any pressure as stated before.
5) Valve box extension supports should be in place before the doors are installed to support the extra weight. No effect otherwise.

After we move the cryostat to the yellow shipping frame then it will be spending some time on the floor of B912 before it’s shipped to 1008.
While it’s in storage do we:
- Purge with N2?
- Pump with rough vacuum (would require putting doors on the new doghouse)?
- What should be the state of the cold mass supports?
- What should be the state of the heat shield supports?
- Does the installation of the Valvebox extension supports affect any of the above?

Hi Kin and Dave,
The XPhenix rods are tight and the heat shield restraints are installed. Once you have move the solenoid out of the iron I can install the support struts for the valve box extension.
