Hello,
From the discussion below, we decide to have a meeting next Wed. (Dec. 9, 2020) at 1 pm to discuss about the Cryo group’s plan to access the internal piping to change the coax helium line into 2 separate lines for supply and return.
Indico page is here: https://indico.bnl.gov/event/10194/ .
I guess everybody is now familiar with ZOOM meetings and so I try to organize the meeting in ZOOM for the 1st time. Let me know if people have problem with it. ( Bluejeans is still available. ) You can click the zoom meeting below to get access to it. It’s available even now (though there may not be anybody there). I tested it with another person 15 minutes ago.

Michael,
We are looking to take off the 2 sides of the solenoid valve box in 912 from the attached picture. The goal is to access the internal piping to change the coax helium line into 2 separate lines for supply and return. We can review if any changes or repairs can be made once the valve box is open. Ray’s effort would be similar to what he did for the dog houses, were we would have a crew to review and record his work of taking of the side panels so they can learn to do it themselves.
I touched base with Paul Kovach already and he kindly send over his last model of the solenoid. It was the same model as we got from him back at the end of the high power testing. It is a fine model, but it does not have detail of the coax line in the valve box. If Paul has the drawings to complete that portion of the modeling, then perhaps we can use his talents to work on that aspect. Our plan was to open the valve box and take measurements to add those lines to the model before we render a solution to split that line.
Kin’s proposed meeting seems like a good starting point to review this effort again and what we would could do to for the final installation. We are aware of the internal leak but from testing, one turbo molecular pump was able to keep up with it to maintain good insulating vacuum. Worse case, we can live with the leak if a proper repair can not be made but we can discuss further at the meeting. Thank you, Paul Orfin

Kin, Paul,
Please let me know how much effort you need from Ray and when it is needed.
I’m not exactly sure of what you need but it seems you are planning to inspect the valve box in an effort to reverse engineer it and make changes. This is the first I am hearing about this. You recall we have much of this modeled in Creo. Did anyone review the Creo model to see if the information is there? We can help with this if needed.
Also, you are certainly aware that after a few repairs there remains a helium leak in the valve box. (I have previously recommended that EIC build a new valve box if the magnet is to be reused). You should be certain before proceeding that the intended modifications due not exacerbate the existing leak.
Regards, Mike

Hi Kin,
Of course I’d be willing to lend assistance / advice for opening up this valve box. Please run information through Mike Anerella with an estimate of time involved and dates so this won’t impact our regular production / test schedule.
Thanks and Regards, Ray

Hi Ray,
You got the email below from Paul Orfin more than a week ago, right ?
Are you OK in helping us taking off the 2 large side plates on the Valvebox ? Maybe, we can ask Tom whether he can use his video camera to do what he did the last time ??
Do you think we need to have a meeting to discuss any details ? Or you just need to know the time and work with our Cryo group (Paul Orfin, Tom Tallerico …) ??
Kin

All,
We will begin the process to modify the sPHENIX valve box and I would like to review the effort to make the modifications at 912. Below if a list of items needed to make this happen during the winter/spring. Let me know if we need a formal meeting. Attached is a picture of the valve box in 912 for reference.
i. May request a 3D scan from Matt’s group. Cryogenics to request.
Thank you, Paul Orfin
