The https://indico.bnl.gov/event/10194/ page contains the agenda and the picture of the Valvebox which we made use of many times.
Present: Mike Anerella, Ray Ceruti, Achim Franz, Russel Feder, Jim Mills, Paul Orfin, Winston Pekrul, Carl Schultheiss, Brian Streckenbach, Roberto Than and Kin Yip
- Since Ray Ceruti and Mike Anerella didn’t join the meeting until ~15 minutes and ~30 minutes respectively after the meeting started at 1 pm, similar questions have been asked and explained
a few times.
The picture of the leak that Ray Ceruti found on Oct. 16, 2015 can be found here :
https://brookhavenlab.sharepoint.com/:i:/s/sPHENIXMagnet/External/EaENlqqR1DVHvZpn5htysmkBOg5wImKy1TvGWSCnaN9TxQ?e=3f6Jxj
The leak was probably 6” (down) into the chimney hole (as Ray
suggested in 2015) which is in the center of the Valvebox and is far away from the wall of the Valvebox where Paul would want to work on.
I have red-circled the location on the Valvebox where Paul will work on on the picture inside the powerpoint on the indico page of this meeting:
https://indico.bnl.gov/event/10194/attachments/31749/50456/2020-12-9_sPHENIX_Magnet_Meeting.pptx
Paul Orfin explained that this work (to have separate lines for return and supply) is to try to improve the “pressure budget” that they’ve found non-optimal/insufficient during the High Field Test. The
coaxial lines added will go up to the phase separator, not down, and so it’s far away from the un-fixed leak that we found in 2015. Paul’s team will need to be careful when they do the welding as there
are a lot of Multi-Layer-Insulations which are prone to catch fire. But this is the work of craft that the Cryo group does all the time and they’re confident that they can do it safetly.
After like half-an-hour discussion, we all felt convinced that Paul’s proposed work will not make the existing leak worse and therefore were agreeable to Paul’s proposal.
- Brian Streckenbach has promised to check with Fred Kobasiuk to see when they can build a scaffolding in Bldg. 912 underneath the Valvebox. It may take a couple weeks or so. After
that, we’ll negotiate a time with Ray Ceruti to come to help open the two Valvebox doors which would need < a couple hours. Ray said that it’s not really that complicated and he would bring a new young fellow (not Drew as last time, as he is in military leave).
Tom Tallerico (in an email) has promised to take video of the opening process.
Ray has agreed to bring his tools with him which would make opening the door easier.
- Jim Mills et. al. mentioned that there were various restraints that we’ll need to install in order to transport the Valvebox. We’ve actually rebuilt a couple components with the documentation
here:
https://brookhavenlab.sharepoint.com/:u:/s/sPHENIXMagnet/External/EaGMb_5wwPZBoHk4YuknJQIB73besaxcHHReYAZ6Yo-oaw
The important part is that whatever Paul will install should not prevent the restrains from being installed. Paul agrees and he’ll make sure that will be the case.
- As the questions of transport were raised, Jim reminded us that sometime in the future we need to have meetings to talk about the transport of the Magnet and Valvebox. It may
involve a traveler like what we had done before.
- Russ Feder worried about the documentation and Paul has agreed that he would provide detailed documentation and drawings for the modifications that his team will make.
- The overall plan is to open up the Valvebox => do whatever it is necessary => close up => leak check. Ray suggested that we don’t install the restraints in the Valvebox until a month
or two before we really want to transport the Valvebox.
