Hi John,
After our discussion about working inside 5 G static magnetic field line. The Collider User Training that you’ve had: https://www.bnl.gov/training/docs/pdf/Collider-User-Training-Guide.pdf said on p.45 that if you work inside 5 G, you need to contact our OMC to make sure that you don’t have pacemaker, insulin pump etc.
This reminds me that I’ve always clicked “Static Magnetic Field>=5 Gauss” in my JAF (Job Assessment Form) so that I’ve got OMC medical surveillance as shown in the attached screenshot.
In fact, I’ve taken the static magnetic field training many times : https://training.bnl.gov/portal/TQ-SMF (in which you can take a glimpse of our Magnet with an ANSALDO sign)
and I’ve just taken it again.
From the above training and also this documentation in SBMS (https://intranet.bnl.gov/esh/shsd/Requirements/IBR_Standards/NIR_ACGIH_TLV.pdf):
For the static magnetic field, the whole-body limits (we use at BNL) are:
TLV (Threshold Limit Values): 2 T (general workplace) 8 T (special training)
So, you can go to area up to 2 T if you have that OMC surveillance and the SMF training (this training seems to be required only >= 600 G … but it’s not too bad to take it). The SMF training said that at BNL currently, there is nothing > 2 T actually 😊
From this document, https://sbms.bnl.gov/Uploads/SA/118/9.1/1u02e011.pdf, the next sign after 5 G is 2 T.
So, it seems that basically, you just need to make sure you’ve the OMC surveillance (and probably the SMF training) in order to work in an area of (say) 100 G 😊 I’ve done a couple/few MRI, those magnetic fields are 3 T or higher …
Kin
