Hello Paul,

Thanks !

… Are you guys finishing off the MLI for the Valvebox as well as putting back to valve to Valvebox ?

After that we can do a hipot   and  then we can ask Ray Ceruti to help us install components for transport.

Kin

All,

Testing on the 2 large vacuum valves were completed and they were able to hold vacuum without any significant loss while cycling.

As a result, with the low risk of failure and based on budgetary limitations from the email chain below, we will not buy new valves nor a spare for the upcoming test.

Let me know if anyone objects and would like to purchase 1 or 2 new valves.

Thank you,

Hi guys,

I definitely defer to your good judgement on this.  The coffers are starting to get pretty low for the project and we would probably have to make a good argument to Ed to free up funds to get a new valve.  However, after the first run, if we think it is necessary, money may be more readily available then.

Thanks again for your help with this.  I appreciate it a lot.  Have a nice evening.

Jim

Hi,

I tend to agree with Paul.  I bring in Jim Mills in case he's got stronger "conviction".

All,

We have tested the two V1 valves that isolate the two turbomolecular pumps for the solenoid insulating vacuum.  The results are good in that they cycle and have a vacuum tight seal.  These are the original valve we got with the magnet.  We investigated buying replacements.  An exact replacement from the original vendor would be $6,550 each.  Further investigation discovered a nearly identical replacement for only $2,234.50 each.  The valves have a 14 and 10 week lead time from the respective vendors.

Do we want to buy a spare?  Do we want to buy new replacements given the age of these valves?

I recommend no to both questions given the success of this recent test and the low risk associated with failure as well as the failure of both valves.  However, given the delivery time for a replacement and their non-standard configuration (not off the shelf) , I wanted to include others on this decision to finalize.
