Hello,

I understand (though I have missed them in 1008 … too early and too late) that this afternoon, Dan Sullivan and Ray Ceruti have come to 1008

to inspect the opened doghouse and probably even did some cleanup (with alcohol).

This morning, I discussed with Dan and Ray, and later with Jim Mills, Russ Feder, Frank Toldo et. al.    We have agreed on installing the Valvebox on Monday.   Dan and Ray need to put on “indium” on the superconducting busses before the installation (when the superconducting busses from the Valvebox chimney merge with the superconducting busses in the doghouse).  They said that they’d do this early in the morning --- which wouldn’t need > 1 hour.    I’ll attend Jim Mill’s 8:30 am meeting on Monday and hopefully every “party” is good to “go”.

Hello,

The doors for the doghouse are opened already.    You may go to take a look.   ( Frank/Aaron put a plastic wrapping it up to prevent dirt … and

you can open it whenever you want.  )

Hi,

This morning when Frank and Aaron tried to open the doors of the Doghouse, they found that the force/pressure due to vacuum was preventing them from opening it.  We are now waiting for Ken Decker or his colleague to release the pressure (by opening the valve slowly) ...

But this shows that the vacuum of the magnet and doghouse has been kept well even after > 2 weeks. 😁

Hi Kin, Paul,

The system has been connected and pumping for last few days.  The vacuum gauge at the pump inlet is reading ~1mtorr.  If there is nothing else to do at this point, tomorrow the pump can be isolated and removed and the cryostat can remain under vacuum or vented to nitrogen.

Please advise,  Thanks,

..Dan

Thanks a lot !

Vacuum group was using this time to do a “pre-check” on the vacuum from the Extension Doghouse to the Magnet Cryostat to see whether we may pump it down to 100 torr or something

--- Paul Orfin’s suggestion with Dan/Ken.  If this is achieved, it shows that we don’t have a “gross” leak.   This is before Valvebox installation and the more thorough leak check.

All,

I met with Frank this morning, we discussed how we are going to pump on the system and have already started setting everything up.  If we don’t start pumping today we will start first thing in the morning.

Hello,

I’ve talked to Paul Orfin and Dan Weiss.   Paul has the idea that instead of doing any thorough leak check (which we will do after the Valvebox is connected),

the vacuum group can do a “pre-check” to try to pump down the doghouse/Magnet cryostat to ~100 Torr (say).   If that can be accomplished, it means that

there is no “gross” leak.   Dan is now trying to see whether they can do this (hopefully as quickly as possible)  😊

Paul’s “beautiful” plan/wish is that if the vacuum group can connect to the port under the Doghouse on Friday and they can use the weekend to do the vacuuming ….

though Dan told me that they may not be able to do so this weekend.     ( I just talked to Frank Toldo who is on vacation today, in principle, but he’ll be back on tomorrow/Friday. )

Kin,

I thought those items had to be moved for the inner HCAL install, apparently that is not the case.

The question remains, should a vacuum leak check be done on the current vacuum boundary of the solenoid and the doghouse extension as it currently sits in the AH? Vacuum relief installation and adjustment to the solenoid supports were made which potentially impact the vacuum boundary.  I don’t know the details of either as to determine a risk level.

Hi Paul,

  •   I believe some work was done by Carl on that connector for the voltage taps.

I believe you’re talking about the connector below the Extension Doghouse, right ?!

Carl has NOT done anything for that connector beside measuring the voltages during the hipot test a few months ago.   I was just chatting with Carl and I told him about

your “accusation” 😊   As we discussed in length a few months ago, we’ll change the connectors (T) below the Doghouse (to L) etc. in the future after the scaffolding is there and after the Valvebox installation.   But we haven’t done anything yet !!!

  • Was a leak check done to verify Carl’s work as well as the installation of the vacuum reliefs? If not, do we want to do so now or wait till the solenoid valve box is assembled.

Carl agrees that we should do a leak check after the connector (which contains voltage taps) is changed as we planned/agreed a few months ago.

Kin,

One question that came up at our meeting out at 1008 was whether the solenoid and its dog houses had a vacuum leak check done when it got to the Assembly Hall.

Recalling previous discussions, the risk of damage was low given the transportation distance, so we did not do a pressure test.  I believe some work was done by Carl on that connector for the voltage taps.  The vacuum reliefs were also installed as well as adjustments to the solenoid supports.

Was a leak check done to verify Carl’s work as well as the installation of the vacuum reliefs? If not, do we want to do so now or wait till the solenoid valve box is assembled.

Hi Dan,

I’m always bold in answering questions …

The Valvebox is still in 912 and has not been transported to 1008 yet.    The transportation may happen next week.

Russ and others will help direct the Valvebox installation --- Ray Ceruti in Magnet Div. is one main guy.   But after the installation, I think

Paul Orfin is still your main “interface-person” (sorry for my poor English 😊 ) with our Magnet/Cryo equipment.

But if you need local resources (power …), I believe Russ and/or Frank Toldo can help you.

Hi Kin, Russ,

Vacuum is planning support for vacuum generation and leak detection of the solenoid cryostat and solenoid valve box in the assembly hall.  A vacuum blower station (208V/30A) will be placed on the floor and connected to the SC splice box. Man lift support will be needed for some of this.  Has any of the cryostat or splice box already been leak checked since arrival in the assembly hall?  The valve box will be leak tested once installed on the platform.

Who should vacuum group contact and include in coordinating this work?

Thanks,

..Dan

All,

If it was not clear from Roberto’s email, we would like to officially request assistance with sPHENIX vacuum roughing in the Assembly hall.  We can discuss the details separately if you’d like but basically a big rough pump and a long hose would be needed.  We’d also need some vacuum leak checking on the insulating vacuum boundary before we start pumping.  7/11/22 seems to be the rough start date but the schedule seems to keep changing out there.

ASSEMBLY HALL /PLATFORM WORK

One item that we can do before the roll-in and we will not have a completed powering of the system is insulating vacuum system.

In order to do the solenoid insulating volume (cryostat & solenoid valvebox) helium mass spec leak test in the ASSEMBLY HALL, we need to setup a rough pump skid in the assembly hall.

We can leave the rough pump skid at ground level, but would need a long vacuum line. Need 208VAC source and long extension line.

The portable turbo cart and spec will be rigged onto the platform.

Vacuum pumpdown and degassing and leak checking will take a while.

IP8 Valvebox: We will do a mass spec leak check once the valvebox arrives, to check if transport was ok.: Do we land it at 1008 or 1005R.

1008: If no space, will need to leave outside and tarp.

1005R: Make some room in 1005R Roll up door.

SPACE SHARING:

Solenoid valve box: Current lead side: We will be competing for time to install the LHe supply/return lines with the install of the current lead power cables/termination box, unless the termination box will not go in until after the ROLL-IN, when they do the final cross-connect of the water cooled busses.

Solenoid valve box: Insulating vacuum turbo side: Hardware/turbo can be installed.

Below platform floor grating work: Cryo has some piping to install.

Platform cable tray install may have to wait for this?

IP8 Valvebox:

Cryo-ETs and Cryo-MTs needs coordination among ourselves.

IP8 HALL WORK

Strategy would be to connect the cryo controls first to allow trouble shooting and checkout while cryo mechanical do the cross connect install.

Thanks,

Roberto
