Ed, et.al.

The sPHENIX magnet test is complete.   The liquid helium boiloff started between 21:30 and 22:00 hours last night.  I have verified that all of the helium supply and return valves for the sPHENIX magnet are in the closed position.  For valves that require air to open, the air line has been removed and the input plugged.  One cryo valve required air to stay closed, that air line is attached with the air valve open.  This valve is on the return side of the system, so if air pressure is lost and the valve opens, there is no change of He flow to the magnet.

There is no longer any ODH hazard possible in 1008, and the area is being down posted.  Postings for magnetic field hazards are being evaluated.

LOTO is no longer required for personnel access to the magnet bore.  LOTO is no longer required on the magnet power supply for access to the magnet bore.  Of course LOTO may be required for service and maintenance on either the cryo system or the magnet power supply.

    Hi Ray,
As you can read in Kin's email, the sPHENIX magnet tested covered by the USI
are over. The value from the RHIC ring  cryo into the sPHENIX magnet. The magnet
is warming and is above LHe temperatures. The power supply is off. See attached
temperature of the magnet. Based on the USI text,

"After the magnetic field measurements are recorded and accepted, the testing will
be complete. The RHIC cryogenic system will no longer supply the magnet with LHe.
The magnet power supply will be turned off, the LHe supply valves closed, and all supply
cryogens that pose an ODH hazard within the area will be isolated. Once He flow is stopped,
the ODH condition ends. The magnet will warm as remaining liquid He is boiled off.
This will remove the ODH hazard and the ODH classification of the facility,
and satisfy an identified end state of this USI."

In our judgement, based on the USI,  there is no more ODH hazard in 1008 and the LOTO associated
with the inadvertent powering of the magnet is mute because the magnet is warm
and no longer superconducting. We plan to proceed working in 1008 tomorrow morning under
the assumption of no ODH hazard in 1008, and no LOTO for magnetic field danger,
unless we hear otherwise from you or others in CAD.  Thank you.

Hi,

I h’ve just checked and chatted with the Cryo Control Room.   Cryo Control Room started to boil off He ever since I called them around 6:33 pm.

I attach a plot of the temperature sensors closest to the magnet coils.  The first peak was due to the fast discharge at 1000 A which was about when the boiling off started.

The Helium in the reservoir(s) (at the upper platform) was first boiled whereas Helium in the Solenoid Magnet around the coil was about the last to be boiled off.   As you

can see from the plot, around 10 pm, as the boiling-off process was near the end, i.e. no more Helium around, the temperature of the magnet coil finally started to rise.

In the plots, both sensors were already > 10 K.

Great, thanks Kin.  Adrian, when you get the go-ahead to remove the ODH signage (do we want to just cover them, since we will need to put them back up in a few months?  I am not sure what the protocol is), would you let us know?  Thanks so much.  Have a nice evening and see you all tomorrow.

Best regards,

Jim

Subject: [Sphenix-magnet-l] Pablo's test completed ... Cryo can warm up 1008

Hi,

Pablo Rosas' test has just completed.  ( We opened the contactors of dump resistor in 1008 so that we could go home 30+ minutes earlier. )   Today, Pablo didn't really work on "compensation" or change regulation.  He and his team have taken a lot

of data for currents/voltages for the Power Supply and the Regulator, using his precise meter and a different logger, not found

in the data kept in LogView (which are routed through our quench-detector data chain and the PSI-ramp-control data chain).

Pablo cares more about the Power Supply information than most of us.

I've just informed the Cryo Control Room (and  I discussed with Roberto about the timing a few hours ago).  So, Cryo will shut the valve in 1008 to stop He supply from the RHIC ring and boil off the remaining He in 1008.  As a result, tomorrow Adrian Steinhauff can take off the ODH sign for 1008 --- we have discussed a couple times about this.    ( Roberto told me that for warming half of the RHIC ring, they'll do it up tomorrow as it requires 3 of them with a bit more works. )

Ron Walker is the one who has been baby-sitting the Power Supply in 1008B for the last several hours and he's also the on-duty CAS member tomorrow morning (from 5:30 am onwards).  He'll help Frank Toldo do the LOTO's to open the pole-tip doors tomorrow morning.
