Hello, Jim,
Roberto Than and I have discussed quite a bit about this. As “designed”, we’ll go to the 80K after we ramp down the magnet for this run (2023) Monday morning (Aug. 14).
The “additional” challenge is that RHIC needs to re-install the cold-snake and therefore the Blue Ring will be warmed up. sPHENIX Magnet makes use of the Blue Ring. This is a problem. But then Roberto has thought of a scheme though we’ve got only “single valve isolation”. We asked Mike Gaffney (Cryo SME) about it and Mike agrees that it’s safe for us to use “single valve isolation” to keep sPHENIX Magnet cold at 80K. ( I guess Mike is kind of familiar with our system, too. ) Roberto has already had a scheme of some jumper changes to deal with Blue Ring warmup.
In a reply to another Cryo colleague (P. Talty), Roberto wrote the following :
========================================================= We are doing the jumpers: Blue west half empties on Monday 14 Heater warmup of sextant 8/9 till Mon 21 SPHENIX Drift for a week from Mon 14 till Mon 21 to Wed 23/Fri 25 Heater warmup of sextant 8/9 done: Depressurize valvebox 10:00 S-line to add tee on the 1010 sphenix control valve. Isolate sPHENIX side of S-line to add tee-in for warm gas jumper from Yellow 8:00 VB.
Start LN2 mode once temperature drift is above 80K. =========================================================
We don’t need to understand everything that Roberto wrote above, as we just trust that he’ll make it work 😊
We really owe a lot to Roberto and the Cryo group for helping us to cool the Magnet !

Hi Kin,
What temperature are we going to leave the magnet at? Will we warm up to room temperature or do we want to go to an LN2 temp. range? We haven't talked about this in a while and I have been meaning to talk with you and John about it.
Thanks, Jim

Hi,
I’ve made some summary notes on the google doc .
Recording is listed at the end of https://indico.bnl.gov/event/20263/ .
I’ll start to ramp down the Magnet at 5 am on Monday (Aug. 14), to allow all sub-detectors to make use of the Magnetic Field to the very end.
