Announcements - Xin, Jin

As MVTX proposal and reviews being planned in the coming months, we plan to make the HF topical group meeting regular, about once a month. While regular simulation tasks is updated in the simulation meetings, we will use the topical group meetings to provide a platform to discuss the HF physics @ sPHENIX and status in review preparation.

Plans updated on wiki: https://wiki.bnl.gov/sPHENIX/index.php/Heavy_Flavor_Topical_Group#Planning

Next TG meeting about one month later. Will use doodle to select for new monthly time.

Project news - Ming Liu

Slide 2: Now MVTX detector is a standalone project from sPHENIX that enables the sPHENIX HF program

Ming: Nevertheless, our intention is to install MVTX on day-one of sPHENIX

Slide 4: lots of update on MVTX Readout R&D, C&S, and integration with rest of tracker system

Slide 5: Updated key dates:

  • Late June,  sPHENIX/MVTX review  dry run
  • Early July for BNL director review

·       Aug/Sept: Updated proposal after director's review

Status of Physics Case Preparation - Xin, Jin

Slide 2-3: generic physics and review of D-meson world data

Slide 4: updated physics plot time lines

Jin: sPHENIX SP is iterating updating with CAD on luminosity projections. We should follow the final projection to update uncertainties in the end

Jin: we hope also incorporate correlation measurements (d-b-jets and Non-prompt-D-b-jet) with model curves for the proposal too.

Slide 5-6: task list and status from last meeting.

Given high time pressure, volunteers are welcomed. Also we have a wish list of studies that looking for volunteers too : https://wiki.bnl.gov/sPHENIX/index.php/Heavy_Flavor_Topical_Group#Planning

Comparison of MVTX projections with Models - Cesar da Silva

Summary: extracted b-jet cross section and production channel to be used by Ivan’s group for b-jet RAA predictions @ sPHENIX

Additional request: it will be great to also add curves for di-b-jet projections, B-meson-b-jet and Non-prompt-D-meson-b-jet projections.

Slide 4: simulation output

Jin: We expect lower fraction of B (10% or so) from gluon splitting. Is the “gluon”- labelled events also include flavor excitation?

Cesar: Yes. And will work with Ivan’s group on using consistent definition for the massive-gluon channel in Ivan's calculation.

Xin: can we go to lower pT than 15 GeV/c?

Cesar/Jin: probably the current simulation from Darren used 10 GeV q^hat in pythia8, which we should avoid lower the observed jet pT to be close to 10 GeV/c.

Open-b x-section requirement- Tony Frawley

Summary: new Industrial standard for Upsilon comparison is open HF x-section instead of p+p, which avoids problems of nPDF uncertainties. We should consider add open b-x-sec measurement to sPHENIX. Expect total error of 10%.

Tony: Considering B->J/Psi down to pT below 1GeV/c, require additional electron ID.

Xin: STAR achieved dE/dx ~7% in TPC. For non-prompt-D0 -> piK, it is challenging to go to low pT (<2GeV) without PID.

Xin: LBNL also plans to look into exclusive B-channel to help address full x-section.

Updated B-meson projection - Xiaolong Chen

Summary: rerun D-meson simulation for updated tracking macros and centrality ranges. Projection for R_AA and v2 updated.

Xiaolong: should we rerun full embedded Geant4 simulation with ladder geometry?

Jin/Tony: we probably want to wait until the new pattern recognition software to be ready.

Haiwang: testing the new Kalman-based patter recognition software + ladder geometry. Performance similar to ideal pattern recognition.

Jin: with 2GeV/c non-prompt-D pT cut, what is the corresponding x-section for the parent B-meson?

Xiaolong/Xin: FONNL show non-prompt-D with pT>1 GeV -> 75% total cross section. pT>2GeV/c cut leads to 1/3 of cross section. After Au_Au suppression, it may be even smaller. Very hard to constraint to 10% level with a non-prompt-D pT>2GeV/c cut.

Non-prompt-D b-jet correlations - Xuan Li

Summary: establishing non-prompt-D and b-jet correlation for sPHENIX

Xin: how the pi + K pairs were selected and simulated?

Xuan: Pythia8 truth simulation with truth tracing to a D-meson

Xin: What was the Pythia8 setting?

Xuan: hard QCD, inclusive b-production

Xin: angular correlation observables will be very interesting too. Collision energy loss will leads to a widen \Delta Phi

Xuan : good point!

Plan: Communicate off line on using LBNL fast simulation package for D-background estimation. Verify fast simulation package with full Geant4 simulation in case of correlated background.
