Hi Gunther and Dave,

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, very good. They will be incorporated into the final version.

Cheers,

Ming

Hi Ming et al,

Below are a few more comments. Most of these just concern the wording, and whether it's worth sending an updated document to Berndt depends a bit on whether he is planning to share this with e.g. DOE or others. It might be useful to converge on one particular description of MIT's role, where the main text and the appendix use quite different terms.

Best,

Gunther

rest of the sPHENIX tracking detectors" -> "overall sPHENIX inner tracking system"

"on the readout R&D" -> "on readout R&D"

"MIT will be leading the engineering design" - Appendix says "Global mechanical system integration and cooling;" not obvious that this is synonymous

"The designs" -> "The design"

"design efforts" -> "design effort"

"One of the highest risks that would impact the project is that the ALICE CERN facility would no longer be available for MVTX...." -> "One of the largest risk factors for the project concerns the availability of the ALICE CERN facility for MVTX production. This could be mitigated by identifying early funding to secure MVTX production at CERN."

Suggestion for next paragraph:

The MVTX will enable precision measurements of open bottom RAA and v2 in sPHENIX via inclusive and exclusive decay reconstruction at intermediate and low pT  (covering down to nearly zero pT ) and will allow b-jet-tagging at high pT, reaching up to 40 GeV/c in pT. With the large acceptance and high rate capability of sPHENIX, the MVTX will also open up other new heavy-flavor correlation measurements at RHIC. These studies are complementary to the heavy flavor program at LHC and are of central importance for  achieving the science goals highlighted in 2015 NSAC LRP - “probe the inner workings of QGP by resolving its properties at shorter and shorter length scales.”

Hi Ming,

Below is an edited version of the first few paragraphs. As time appears to be of the essence, we're sending comments as we go through the text.

The sPHENIX detector, currently under development, is designed to study the microscopic nature of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) through new measurements that probe the QGP over a range of scales. This addresses one of the top scientific priorities for the Hot QCD field specified in in the 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan, exploiting the unique capabilities provided by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Key elements of the sPHENIX Hot QCD program are high statistics studies of fully reconstructed jets, high precision upsilon spectroscopy and a comprehensive program of heavy-flavor measurements.

Of particular importance are bottom-quark jets and B-mesons, for which mass effects are expected to play the most significant role.  Precise B-meson measurements offer a unique opportunity to understand the transport properties of QGP at RHIC through the mass dependence of parton energy loss in the QGP medium.

Reconstruction and identification of B-mesons requires precision tracking close to the interaction point with high detection efficiency. The proposed upgrade of the sPHENIX experiment with a vertex detector (MVTX) based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors, located close to the interaction point, will provide these capabilities, and allow a broad range of measurements over a wide momentum range near mid-rapidity. The MVTX detector will also significantly improve current charm baryon measurements and enable heavy-flavor correlation measurements at RHIC (see Appendix 1).

Dear all,

Following the discussions form last MVTX bi-weekly meeting, we have drafted a MVTX executive summary for ALD’s upcoming DOE visit.

Please send your comments/suggestions by NOON tomorrow 10/25 if possible.

Cheers,
