Hi Martin,
Thanks for the clear instructions.
I cc'd mvtx-list also as several of us are working on new GTM integration now.

Cheers,
Ming

Dear all,

several of us had asked for an updated version of the OS/firmware for
the GL1/GTM unit.
(Cameron was among those - I'm too lazy now to check if you are
subscribed to this list - sorry if you get this twice).

Joe had a new generic distro made based on the latest Debian. This one
has all its ties to the repositories intact, and you can install
standard software through apt as usual.

I updated the original generic image with Joe's currently latest
firmware "gl1_gtm_top_v2.bit", installed some niceties (such as emacs,
and some utilities, bc, tcpdump, nmap, lsof, etc etc) to make it an
actually useful system.

The original image that was originally created was 32G in size, with
most of it empty. I dropped the size of the root partition down from
30GB to 2GB (85% full), which dramatically reduces the size of the
resulting image. After you load the image on your SD card, you can then
expand the partition and file system to use all the space on your card.

Joe's suite of low-level utilities was consolidated into one area, and I
added our standard installation method to it (autogen.sh,
automake/autoconf/libtool). You can install it like any of our standard
packages. The SD card has the current version pre-installed.

I set up an area in the RACF git repository to manage the Linux software
(not the firmware) at
https://git.racf.bnl.gov/gitea/sPHENIX/gl1_gtm
You can get futures updates here.

Joe: I went through and gave all files except the compiled binaries a
proper extension (.sh, .py, .dat, ....) as it is standard. Much easier
to work with that.

However, I then ran into a snag with the distribution... I was under the
impression that I put the image file into an area visible from the
internal sphenix web server... not so. I have not kept up with the
latest development here, apparently. I'll figure it out. For now,

> scp
yourself AT rftpexp.rhic.bnl.gov:/sphenix/WWW/DAQ/gl1_gtm/gl1gtm_sd_image_2G.img.bz2
./

uncompress, and dd it on the SD card.

If you need help with expanding the partition and file system, please
pipe up.

BTW, the system's root pw is "root". On boot, it tries to get a DHCP
address, and brings up its serial port with 115200 bd.

Enjoy!

Best,
Martin
