I'm wondering if anyone has a good idea for management of plots, figures, sketches, drawings, and pictures. I am looking for some shared web resource that will make it easier to find that pesky figure when you're writing slides at the last minute or trying to finish that report that Project Management insists on having immediately. It would also be good practice for us all to have access and use a common set of figures. Since we'll soon begin writing a CDR, it would be nice to have something in place that will make that easier.
For my pictures, I like Google Photos really well, and it brings a lot of computing to bear on searches in images, but it doesn't play well with pdf's, as far as I know.
I use an elog for my own notebook, and that has some nice features, like thumbnails, but it doesn't do very well on large numbers of figures.
You can make Wiki pages, but there's a lot of hand-editing needed; here's an example:
https://wiki.bnl.gov/sPHENIX/index.php/DrawingIndex1
You can use our docDB, but that doesn't support thumbnails or previews, so you have to go by description; here's an example:
https://docdb.sphenix.bnl.gov/cgi-bin/private/ShowDocument?docid=31
Just dumping them into github works pretty well:

https://github.com/haggerty/pCDR-figures-20151027
and you can use "markdown" directives to add more text to them.
The features I think you want are easy preview, search, ability to store many images in one commit. I'm sure given enough time we could write a visual database from scratch, but then we'd be maintaining it; I was hoping we could find something that would spare us that.
The best option seems to be github, but maybe there is something better out there. Any ideas?
