Dear John^2,

This is NOT surprising from the Geant 3 or 4 simulation. It does not track
neutrons at very low energy. If one tracks the neutrons and converts the
mass into the "visible" energy, one should get the most "lost" energy back, I
would think.

This is not a huge problem as long as we have better knowledge about the
sampling fraction and the shower profile.

my two cents,
Xiaochun

John,

Just to add another point, I used my favored GEANT example AnaEx01 to
just add up all the energy from a single incident 50 GeV pi+ in a silly
calorimeter:

> ---> The calorimeter is 10 layers of: [ 1000mm of G4_STAINLESS-STEEL + 1mm
> of G4_POLYSTYRENE ]

(i.e., 10 m of steel, and a large transverse size) with all GEANT
defaults is that same 45 GeV you mentioned. I tried putting the
particle into the middle of the calorimeter to see if there was some
kind of albedo going on, and it gave a similar distribution.
