Hi Carlos, Ron,

a gpfs filesystem slows down when you get close to 100%. It's a distributed filesystem with 2 copies, it uses quotas to split the PB sized disk arrays into filesystems. When you are above some high water mark it has to do some explicit accounting how much space is really available for a given filesystem and I guess employ some write scheduling so concurrent processes cannot write beyond 100%.

I've also noticed some lag this evening (both slow disks and some latency in the network connection), but my guess is that's not related to your quota problem.  See if you can clear up a few hundred MB or so and try again---that should be enough space for make to be able to create your new object files.  If it works, that answers your question.
