Hi Ed and all
Although we should really be asking STAR folks (like
Fleming) to point us to the recent SAMPA reviews, I have
attached what I can provide. This is the presentation from
Chuck Britton made at the ALICE-USA BTU (Barrel Tracker
Upgrade) in June 2016. I am not aware of any more recent
documents on the SAMPA written more recently than this one.
I also think that this completes the homework items that
had my name on or near them. Note also from my prior mail
that the HV cost was not yet captured, but it is now estimated
in two ways (scaling ALICE and CAEN quotation) each of which
has the caveats applied as indicated in my prior mail...

Hi Ed
I've converted the text that I sent you in an earlier
mail into powerpoint. To try and save you a little
time, I used a template that I stole from an earlier
presentation of yours. Please note that we have TWO
cost estimates in this document for module HV. One of
these takes the ALICE TDR (2014) and scales their
estimate of $200,000 CHF into dollars and then scales by
the different number of modules we have as compared to
them. The other one uses a quote from CAEN that Bob
Azmoun managed to get tonight as a personal favor from
Marco. The quote was made for a different assumption
(more than one chain runs from one HV source) and so
that fact that these two totals agree is NOT because the
original ALICE estimate holds up but really reflects our
running more than one stack per HV output (which is a
bit risky). However Marco DOES state in his Email that
this fast quote does not yet reflect discounts that he
expcts would apply. This is really the best we can do
in one evening...
BTW-- None of the fancy HV makers (CAEN, WEINER) have
50 kV power supplies available on their web sites (and
Marco says that CAEN does not make these). But DUH(!!)
we're swimming in these kind of power supplies at SBU
since we dismantled the beam lines in the target hall.
We can easily donate the same 80 kV HV power supply that
we used for testing HVPF material (and planned to use
for testing the field cage) to sPHENIX. (Note that this
is probably only a $5-10k savings)

Hi Ed,
Homework assignment:
"Please
present your current plans and
understanding of tracker integration and
commissioning and how this dovetails with
the total detector integration. (John H, Don, Jim)"
I address the mechanical integration,
installation and commissioning of mechanical
systems. John, Eric or Steve should address
the electronics and DAQ integration and
commissioning.
Our understanding of the tracker
integration and commissioning is as follows:
1. BNL sets the outline (limiting)
dimensions for the 3 tracker subsystems to
include stay clear space between detectors.
These are to be recorded in an outline
drawing for each subsystem (already existing
for TPC) not yet finalized for MAPS and
INTT.
2. Subsystem groups will provide sPHENIX
project engineers with specs for cables
(sizes and quantity), cooling requirements,
and other services (gas, etc.). sPHENIX
project engineering will implement these
requirements, provide space and routing of
services, piping and cabling including cable
trays, structural supports for services,
racks and space allocation on sPHENIX
carriage platforms.
3. SPHENIX project engineering will
design and provide structural support for
the physical detectors with positioning and
alignment provisions for the carriage and
magnet in accordance with sPHENIX project
parameters, and will coordinate with
subsystems groups to design local alignment
and positioning of the tracker subsystems
integrated with subsystem groups designed
mounting provisions.
4. Subsystems groups are responsible for
pre-installation commissioning, internal
alignment and assembly of detector
components. SPHENIX project engineering is
responsible for detector installation,
alignment and survey, commissioning of
services and utilities and full sPHENIX
system commissioning (with appropriate
coordination from subsystem groups).
5. SPHENIX project managers have
provided schedule and resources for the
integration of tracker subsystems, and
tracker subsystem groups will provide
subsystem components fully ready for
integration into the sPHENIX full system in
accordance with this schedule and will
provide appropriate subsystem experts and
technical support personnel to fit within
the schedule and resource budgets. (Note: It
will likely be necessary to make adjustments
to budgeted schedule and resources as the
design of these tracking subsystems matures.
SPHENIX management will provide appropriate
oversight and guidance to the subsystems to
assure that these adjustments are
reasonable, prudent and stay within the
overall project scope.
