FYI,
Looks like AMD is getting a significant boost from the US Department of
Energy from the Oak Ridge "Frontier" procurement. Significant items to
note are the use of "custom" AMD CPU's and, more importantly, AMD GPU's.
On the CPU side, would be interesting to see if there are changes to the
CPU "chiplets", changes to the I/O die, changes in the type of chiplets
in the MCM or something completely different. On the GPU side, there is
supposed to be significant investments in the AMD ROCm software stack
which includes the HIP, a software stack to simplify porting of Cuda code.
Given what appears to be a significant amount of customization, would be
interesting to see if this work leverages engineering capabilities
obtained from AMD's work with the PS4, Xbox and PS5.
