U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Level 2 and Deputies-NSF only Management Mailing List

Hi all,

I've discussed with Eric Torrence what would be most useful for me to present at the I&I scrubbing meeting on July 6. A quick summary is given below. Please try to get this to me by June 30 so that I can put it all together in a coherent way.

1. For all the estimates below, we need to understand what effort beyond what is currently supported in M&O will be required for I&I activities. If you are assuming that some of the current US ATLAS supported M&O effort will be devoted to I&I during LS3, please let me know what this is, but do *not* include it in your effort/cost estimates below.

2. If there are any updates to the nature of the I&I work that you will be doing with respect to the tasks that are included in the old NSF I&I scrubbing report posted on the indico below, please include them in an updated version of the file.

I believe that everyone (except TDAQ) has provided me with updated dates for the activities in that file, but please confirm.

3. I will need to present effort and cost estimates in two ways

    a. Effort & cost by FY

    b. Cost for the current NSF CA (until 31-Jan-2027)

    c. Cost for the next CA (starting 01-Feb-2027)

If it's easy for you to do, you can just update the resource loading in the scrubbing report above and I can create the profiles. Otherwise, sending me the profiles with effort broken into costed and uncosted components is fine as well.

4. Please send me your requests for support of critical experts during the gap between end of upgrade deliverables and start of I&I work. For this I'll need.

    a. each expert's name and what work they do

    b. when each expert's support needs to start (end of relevant MREFC funding)

    c. when that expert starts I&I work

5. Uncosted effort: we should be sure to include this in our estimates. It will be helpful in showing that we're not just expecting M&O to pay for everything.

6. If your total updated I&I request differs significantly from what is currently in the CA, we'll need justification as to why this change is necessary. In particular, is the US being called on to do a "reasonable" fraction of the I&I work?
