Hi all,

As those of you with NSF experience know, "Broader Impacts"
is a key merit criterion for NSF proposals, and this applies
also to the MREFC. We are being asked to address what the
project contributes to Education and Public Outreach (EPO).
There will in fact be a dedicated EPO presentation by Mark Kruse
at the review. However, it is suggested to include some info
also at the subsystem level, particularly in the L2 talk.
So I need Andy and Tim to talk with their ICs about
EPO impacts. Examples could include involving ugrads in
our research, under-represented groups, events for the public
or other audiences, presentations at schools or other venues, ...
Those of us with NSF base grants probably have such text
in our proposals. Gathering this info might take a bit more
effort for the DOE-supported univ. groups. Note that we
are looking for a "bulleted list" type of material, not a
very detailed quantitative presentation. The point is to
demonstrate that we are invested in EPO, and that we can and
will leverage the MREFC resources to enhance such activities
(note that the MREFC funding is a construction project, and
does not allow MREFC funding to be spent directly on EPO,
so it is really a "leveraging" question).
Particularly helpful to the 1-2 slides I will add to
my L2 talk would be some photos, eg. of ugrads and/or
under-represented groups working in your lab, ...

Please talk to your ICs right away and get me what
you can by Wednesday; this is urgent since it needs to be
added asap to my L2 talk, a version of which has already been
posted to the review site.

John
