Hi All, We had a meeting this morning about the nHCAL preTDR text. Here are my notes of the comments, but Caroline may have more that I missed, so please feel free to add. Significant work is needed on the Physics requirements section (l6314)

Hi All,

We had a meeting this morning about the nHCAL preTDR text. Here are my notes of the comments, but Caroline may have more that I missed, so please feel free to add.

  • Significant work is needed on the Physics requirements section (l6314) and later sections should be streamlined so that physics is either in this section or in global physics sections (e.g. VM decay)
  • Table 8.62 is never referenced in the text
  • More quantification / justification about the radiation dose and lifetime estimates. Same comment to LFHCAL - can we demonstrate the performance / health. Comments about citing a paper from Miguel - but I did not get the link.
  • Must provide timing resolution information
  • Text must do a better job of clarifying / linking to the electron identification to show how nHCAL will benefit e/pi and mu/pi separation etc. Consider adding text in the electron identification part of the document and or linking to that section from the nHCAL discussion
  • Introduction and discussion - make it clear that this is a tail catcher and not a true hadronic calorimeter (different goal, different optimizations, different expectation for energy res / compensation etc.)
  • Drop the discussion of compensation, sends the wrong message for a tail catcher
  • Add a construction drawing or similar to provide a better global context for the location / size / layout of the detector
  • HGCROCv3 -> CALOROC everywhere
  • Rework detector design section to focus on differences wrt to the LFHCAL and make heavy use of simply referencing the LFHCAL section instead of repeating (redundant + then you have things that can be out of sync)
  • Fig 8.165 is not referenced in the text
  • Move clustering and technical introduction to early in the section so that it comes before the studies that make use of clustering.
  • Several comments about removing the “physics” from this section and putting it in the nHCAL physics section or (preferred) global physics sections on VM decays, muon identification etc. Look at ch 4 as a potential place for some
  • Many places with waffling language -> be clear and definite about the plan. No longer the time for listing options, need one clear plan
  • Risk/mitigation we state that we will have some work performed by students -> remove this and think about how to be consistent in terms of risk mitigation with others (LFHCAL Barrel)

Those were my notes on specific comments, though we also have our own list of things that will be updated. Again, Caroline please add or correct anything I missed when you get a chance. We will discuss these comments in next weeks nHCAL meeting and make some plans for addressing them.

Best,
