Maxim will follow this for us, given its relevance to data & analysis preservation.

Dear all,

I thought the described working group and their white paper might be of interest to you all.  Please let me know if you are interested to engage with the team, so we can coordinate the BNL response/engagement.

Many thanks,

Kerstin

Subject: [CRLC] Sustainable Software Working Group

Hello:

We are sending this email to let everyone know about a working group from three labs (ANL, LBNL, and ORNL) that has been thinking holistically about DOE software sustainability. The working group includes representatives from computing research, computing facilities, and non-computing facilities that rely heavily on software at the three labs.  Anshu Dubey, who has been the convener of the WG, is available to give a presentation to CRLC and ECP during our Monday’s meeting with ECP.  Anshu is sending the whitepaper to ECP Leadership as well.

Jim Stewart:  Is it possible to allocate the first 30 minutes of Monday’s meeting to Anshu to give the presentation? In this way, Anshu can get valuable feedback from CRLC and ECP during one meeting.

The members of the working group have been meeting regularly for a few months, and the attached whitepaper is the result of their work to date. The whitepaper is organized as Heilmeier catechism to highlight main concerns. The focus is on all categories of software (including research, production, and operational software) at various facilities and research divisions because many concerns and challenges are similar.  We recognize that there are some efforts within DOE outside of ECP that are trying to go beyond “business as usual” when it comes to mission-critical software; therefore, an inclusive Software Hub as described in the whitepaper might get traction.

Thanks,

Valerie, Barney, and David
