Hi Martin,
Thanks for letting me know, much appreciated. We never have taken SULI students, some of us discussed it in our morning coffee today. It is not so easy (at least for me) to think of software projects that are both well encapsulated and doable enough for a 16-week student, and being fair to the 'Participation in cutting-edge scientific research programs' objective. But Maxim may have an idea, and I'm CCing the NPPS leadership team for their ideas. As you say, the investment in such a student can if we're fortunate pay off later in a strong new employee.

Hi Torre,
I was wondering if you or any of your people are planning to take SULI
students this year. I will pick one this year, but I have a shortlist of
6, of which I interview 2 (one done, one scheduled tomorrow).
Two in particular look like a good match for either CSI or your group,
being steeped in AI and NN and stuff. It looks the one I already
interviewed is super-bright but not 100% enthused about my a bit
closer-to-hardware project. He has impeccable grades and coursework.
I'm just checking if you guys are on board with the OEP. I picked from
the top in the applicants list here, but can take only one in any case,
and it would be a shame to let those wander off to some other Lab. I'll
shoot you the names if you are interested.
If you haven't done SULIs, I had in the past years 6 who were really
good and added real value to the respective project I put them on, and
one was so-so, a good track record. It's also a super way of grooming
and checking out future potential employees. In sPHENIX we have/had 2
employees who found their way to us via SULI. One moved on to Lockheed,
the other is one of our top guys.
Please let me know.
