Hi,
I’m sure you will get feedback from Chris :)

A general comment/grumble.  To date NPP has used existing experiment effort in lieu of this investment.  Belle II FTE to help sPhenix, more Belle II FTE to participate in DUNE - this is all good but it has a cost to Belle II.  I couldn’t devote time to Belle II distributed computing operations (they’re incredibly inefficient), so we miss opportunities there.  In other words, the current strategy forces us to make choices and limit our options, not always a bad thing but it would be better to make a free choice.

For DUNE, we should match the (expected) effort that the FOA will provide in PD funds.  Having high-level input appreciated is good but without people to do work then we cannot capitalise.  This should be PD money because we want to do real work on calibrations to complement Brett’s WireCell team and build on that expertise.

I feel like we are missing an opportunity on "analysis systems”, even if I know you’re engaged with iDDS on ATLAS.  LDRD funds to deploy an analysis system at SDCC (!) would, I think, be useful for that ATLAS work and I would also be interested in exploring this for Belle II where there’s a familiar discussion about analysis trains on reco vs skimming.  Obviously NPPS funds to work on making that as generic as possible and (!) supporting (potentially very) different workflows.

And probably something about qubits if we want to actually get some funding, and Brett has the whole AI/ML thing covered  :)

Hi,

As you may already know, the NPP Strategic Planning process is on-going.  Jamie and I are asked to identify the investment needed for HEP and NP programs in PO.  By investment, we usually mean what we need to do to ensure the future beyond the current programs.  It can be supported by the current programmatic funding, LDRD, PD, DOE FOAs or SPP.Can you provide some input on what investments may be needed in software, before the end of the week?

...Creative input appreciated! :-) Notice is extremely short of course.

(would I want this mail and this discussion going to *anyone* in SDCC, under present conditions? No. Very clarifying :-)
