Hong supports a PD proposal to hire an AI/ML expert/lead for Physics, but this timescale is absurd. Plan is to prepare a strong PD proposal for the *next* call, with a particular focus on making a good case for a Physics position rather than someone in CSI matrixed to us. We'll also start planning for the expectation of HEP/NP FOAs.

Kindly review the email below for the details and requirements of the FY2022 call for Program Development (PD) proposals.  Please be reminded, it is important that we ensure that Program Development funding is not being used to conduct research.  As defined in SBMS, PD activities are defined as planning, analysis, assessment, and feasibility of potential new business areas in science and technology based on long-term customer needs. Attached is the current form that is to be completed for your PD proposal.  Please be sure to reach out to Hong Ma or Wolfram Fischer;  your department chairs for feedback and recommendations.  Also, Sue Pankowski, Jim Desmond and Cris Manalo will support you with your budget pages.

With this email we are issuing a call for Program Development (PD) proposals for FY22.  As in the past, we anticipate that the demand will outstrip the available funds so it will be important for each of you to consider your priorities and to consider how the PD funds you might receive will result in program growth in your area.  

 

Note that no PD’s will be automatically continued.  All existing PD’s that you want to continue must be included in your request and justified, and prioritized, in the same way that new requests are.   

 

As we have stressed in the past, it is important that we ensure that Program Development funding is not being used to conduct research.  As defined in SBMS, PD activities are defined as planning, analysis, assessment, and feasibility of potential new business areas in science and technology based on long-term customer needs.  If the project falls outside of this definition, it will need to be converted to LDRD.  You will also need to provide us with this information. 

 

Please send your input as a priority ordered list to Liz Flynn (lflynn AT bnl.gov) and Kathi Barkigia (barkigia AT bnl.gov) by COB on August 25.
