FYI. Thoughts welcome! Would be interesting to have a toe in the Celeritas game, even if I wouldn't put money on its outcome.

Torre,

Great to learn. And of course.

Great questions, ones I hope to figure out, so glad you ask.

I prefer to have a HEP person with strong s/w dev skills rather
than the converse. That said, I'm not sure the source of funding
(likely to be a some HEP and some ASCR) will determine which
division the hire will need to be in, or if applicants care so much.

Then again, perhaps a higher pay-grade would entice more
(better?) candidates. A cross-appointment (primarily in Physics
where, as you say, PDs are much cheaper) could be the best of
both worlds.

I realize also that some physics PhDs will want to continue doing
analysis work, so possibly more applicants if the job is in the
Physics Division. Only potential concern with this is load-balancing;
don't want someone who will get caught up in analysis work and
neglect the s/w dev.

This is a super cool opportunity for ATLAS, CMS and related PDs
to be a part of, and -- biases aside -- I can't be the only person
thinking that.

So, yea, from a budgeting PoV, I need to have some kind of game
plan w.r.t. hiring someone or not. Note the funding is anticipated
for Aug. 15/22. Note sure yet when the successful proposals will
be notified.

Best,
- Vince

Hi Vince,
Very interesting! We'd be interested for sure, money dependent of course. Can you clarify what you're proposing? Base the postdoc in physics where it's much cheaper? Supplement the SciDAC money with physics money to reach CSI postdoc cost?

Hi, Torre.

Hope all is well.

We are submitting a proposal, led by ORNL, with institutional PIs from ANL, BNL (me) and FNAL, for the "SciDAC5" call: LAB 22-2580. This is to support the development of Celeritas for another five years.

Reason I'm reaching out is because I'd like to get a post-doc to work on this but, as the budget people have pointed out, ~125k/year (my estimated funding, if successful) is only a bit over half of what's needed to support a CSI PD. Not sure about new hires in the spring/early summer of 2022 (or FY23), but figured I'd ask if you'd be interested in a split on a PD working on a computational physics/HPC software for HEP (mostly geared towards HL-LHC).

Would be happy to discuss this more. I've attached the draft LOI for a bit more details about the proposal and scope of work.

Best,
- Vince
