Dear all,

DOE ASCR released today their 2023 EXPRESS call, this is an opportunity, specifically for early career PIs to propose exciting new research directions. This year’s topics are:

  • Modeling Future Supercomputing Systems
  • Programming Techniques for Computational Physical Systems
  • Quantum Algorithms across Models

The inclusion of MSI’s in your proposals is highly encouraged.

Key Information and Deadlines:

  • CSI will coordinate the internal down select, pre-proposals (see attached form) are due to CSIProposals AT bnl.gov , on February 20th
  • Pre-proposal to DOE due March 8th
  • Full Proposal to DOE April 19th
  • Call details: https://science.osti.gov/ascr/-/media/grants/pdf/foas/2023/SC_FOA_0002950.pdf
  • Funding duration: 2 Years
  • Funding amount: For national laboratories $450K-$500K depending on partnering. Other partners $200K-$250K based on classification as per call. The lead organization must request more funding than any other organization on the team.
  • Limitations: No more than 4 pre-proposals led by one organization, no more than 1 pre-proposal per PI.

Best wishes,

Kerstin

Funding Opportunity Announcement:

EXPRESS: 2023 Exploratory Research for Extreme-Scale Science

Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) Number: DE-FOA-0002950

Total Estimated Funding: $10 million

Deadline for Pre Applications (required):

March 8, 2023 at 5:00pm ET

Deadline for Applications:

April 19, 2023 at 11:59pm ET

Funding for basic research to explore potentially high-impact approaches in scientific computing and extreme-scale science.

Extreme-scale science recognizes that disruptive technology changes are occurring across science applications, algorithms, computer architectures and ecosystems. Recent reports point to emerging trends and advances in high-end computing, massive datasets, scientific machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) on increasingly heterogeneous architectures, including neuromorphic and quantum systems. Significant innovation will be required in the development of effective paradigms and approaches for realizing the full potential of scientific computing from emerging technologies. Proposed research should not focus strictly on a specific science use case, but rather on creating the body of knowledge and understanding that will inform future advances in extreme-scale science. Consequently, the funding from this FOA is not intended to incrementally extend current research in the area of the proposed project. It is expected that the proposed projects will significantly benefit from the exploration of innovative ideas or from the development of unconventional approaches.

Please see the funding opportunity for agency contacts and more details, including eligibility and application information.
