New AI/ML effort for HEP

...step 0 will be to add 'and NP'. Hong's list is totally HEP. Is there a similar discussion on NP? I haven't had anything e.g. from Jamie.

Hi all,

A reminder for preparing the one pagers for topics on the Lab Agenda.

I hope you all have discussed with those in your groups who are assigned the tasks.

We need to get this done by early next week.

                Best,

                Hong.

Subject: Lab Agenda for FY24

Hi all,

The Lab Agenda for FY24 will be done in a different way from previous years.

Each science organization will write their own agenda.

The audiences for these Science Agendas are:

  1. The science organization itself: management and staff. Setting out the year’s activities with goals, milestones and timelines.
  2. The other science organizations, to promote cross-organizational collaboration
  3. The operations organizations. Providing guidance as to what might be needed from operations in support of the science agendas.
  4. Lab management. Providing an overview of the anticipated science-led activities and a means to track those activities

Each organization will select a list of initiatives (new or on-going), and each initiative will have a one-pager that documents 10 points.

Details are in this document:

docx icon LabAgenda_PO_HEP.docx

An example from EPS is included.

Dmitri and I discussed, and made a list of “initiatives” that we want to document with suggested responsible persons, most of whom are Physics Dept persons, with a few exception.  We decided to go into finer granularity, so that it captures most of the activities. See below and it is also included in the word file.   The focus is more on the new initiatives, while the major on-going activities are included too.  The new initiatives could be those we plan to submit proposals to FOA, LDRD calls, etc.  Some of the initiatives will be presented/discussed at the lab senior leaders’ retreat in Jan 2024.

Please take a look and provide feedback, and work with those in your groups on the writeup.

Everyone has the write access to the linked WORD file above. Please add the one-pager to the document directly.

Please let Dmitri and me know if there are any questions.

Haiyan has requested the preparation be done by Dec 15th, which is a week before the lab deadline.

Best,

Hong.

Subject: Template for Lab Agenda for FY24

Dear colleagues:

Since some of you were not able to attend today’s NPP management meeting, I am providing the template again to this email.

What we discussed today is for NP/C-AD, HEP and IP to provide high-level agenda using the template for ongoing/existing major activities, and new initiatives such as HEET, CARP, EIC 2nd detector, QIS, etc. Existing programs such as RHIC Run 2024, RHIC science (STAR, sPHENIX), HET, NPT, Energy Frontier, intensity frontier, cosmic frontier, IP/cyclotron. Below are the notes from John Hill. The NPP submission deadline is Dec 15th, and please submit to Fran.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

  1. You should each fill out one of these for each of your initiatives within your organization.
  2. There is not a set number of initiatives, it is what you think makes sense for your organization.
  3. One page per initiative
  4. Initiatives will be either a new initiative or something you are doing to maintain and/or grow existing programs.
  5. Due to me and Kathi on Friday Dec 22nd.
  6. Expectation is that this will be shared within the lab and iterated on.”

Best, Haiyan

Subject: Template for Lab Agenda for FY24

Dear colleagues:

We will discuss the Lab Agenda for FY24 at our meeting next Monday. The lab is doing something different this time for Lab Agenda. For FY24, there will not be a lab-wide agenda, but each organization will prepare their agenda focusing more on initiatives and on what support these initiatives need from the lab/support units. And some of the initiatives will be presented/discussed at the lab senior leaders’ retreat in Jan 2024.

Each initiative will be one page long following the attached template, including an example from Jim Misewich on C2QA.

Please think about prior to our meeting next Monday. Thanks.

Best, Haiyan
