Hi Dave,

Just a few comments to get the discussion rolling....

I think the issue with the title of the talk on the agenda points out the main issue between sPHENIX and the EIC detector community.  The fact that it is so easily referred to as "ePHENIX" attaches a label that implies that "ePHENIX" is a complete concept, and when people from outside sPHENIX start from that point it makes communication and discussion difficult at best. It leaves an impression that we are trying to push "ePHENIX" from an economic starting point, not necessarily from what does the best physics, and it leaves little room for involvement outside the sPHENIX collaboration.

As you rightly point out, nothing could be further from the truth, and we need to fight that impression.  The change in title is a good (and necessary) start, but of course you will have to pitch your talk carefully as well.  You could take a very extreme view and be very explicit that if you were to just take the magnet and flux return (and therefore the outer HCAL) and threw away everything else you would have a foundation for an EIC detector that would build on the existing BNL/DOE investment.  You could then discuss the "EIC detector concept" as a strawman, and welcome and encourage other approaches that build on the sPHENIX foundation.

    Just my $0.02.

Dear sPHENIX cold QCD TG,

I've been asked to give a very brief presentation on "ePHENIX" at the
upcoming EICUG Detector Discussion Meeting, November 30 & December 1 at
Temple University in Philadelphia. It would be very useful to discuss
how to approach this presentation. The agenda for the meeting is now
online here:

One thing I can see right from the start is that we should ask the
organizers to rename the presentation. Some of you will recall we went
to lengths to refer to an EIC detector at IP8 in the very open terms –
the 2014 letter of intent on the archive is titled, "Concept for an
Electron Ion Collider (EIC) detector built around the BaBar solenoid".
I think that continued openness serves us well.

But changing the title is a pretty minor consideration. There are many
other aspects of this presentation that would be good to discuss.

Cheers,
Dave
