The experimental high-energy particle physics group at Rice University invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate to join our efforts on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, expected to begin July 1, 2019. The Rice experimental high-energy particle physics group presently consists of three faculty members, two postdoctoral research associates, and three graduate students.  Additionally, a closely allied Heavy Ion experimental group includes two faculty members, research staff, and graduate students working at STAR and CMS. Further information on our group is available at http://www.physics.rice.edu/Nuclear.aspx.

The Rice group on CMS has a strong background in physics analysis.  We are presently active in analyses that use the production and decay of the Higgs boson to search for physics beyond the standard model.  Rice contributes to the CMS endcap muon system, and its trigger, and the silicon pixel detector, with common interests in trigger electronics, data acquisition electronics, and related software.  For this position the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the endcap muon system and/or its trigger.  We have had an ongoing interest in applying machine learning techniques to the muon trigger and data analysis.

Applicants with (or about to receive) a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics, particle astrophysics, or closely related fields will be considered. Qualified candidates can apply electronically at https://jobs.rice.edu/postings/18925, which requests a curriculum vita, list of publications, and brief description of research interests.  Candidates will also provide contact information of at least three references.

Inquires may be addressed to Prof. Paul Padley (padley AT rice.edu).  Application materials received by May 1, 2019 will be assured full consideration.  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until an appointment is made.  Rice University is an Equal Opportunity Employer with commitment to diversity at all levels, and considers for employment qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, genetic information, disability or protected veteran status.
