sPHENIX general meeting, Nov 4, 2016 from 12:00 (30 people on bluejeans,
~10 people in Rm. 2-219 at BNL)
Collaboration news
CD-0 approved! This is the official approval by DOE that sPHENIX is an
official project. It may make easier for people talking to funding
agencies. Next step is CD-1.
Much greater participation is encouraged at the Atlanta collaboration
meeting since an extensive discussion on the further process towards the
future will be held. Please consider sending a student/postdoc/staff
member from each institution.
ALD, together with collaboration and project management, is discussing a
visit to CERN for resource discussion, e.g., GEM foil production for
TPC, MAPS development.
There will be STAR-PHENIX-SPHENIX spin physics WG to fill the interim
towards sPHENIX startup, specifically it is to do spin running in 2021.
Q(JL): is the STAR’s future plan will be involved? A(GR): some hardware
discussion may be involved, if new hardware is required to fulfill the
physics goal. The cold QCD topical group may also be involved in the
discussion.
Q(CP): Having a run in 2021 is not a good idea, since this is the only
year that the beam is not coming (and the time needed for sPHENIX
installation)? Concern of delay of sPHENIX installation. A(DM): The plan
is still in flux.
Looking for a great speaker for our one sPHENIX QM parallel talk. Send
nominations to Dave and Gunther.
Good presentation of QM posters is important. Calling for idea of
template, etc. There will be no pre-QM meeting.
Please register and come to the sPHENIX collaboration meeting in
Atlanta! Early registration will help planning the plan.
HCal workfest report by John
Nine attendees in the workfest. Not a type of workfest that have been
held before. JL went through the slides from the participants
The capacitor-like module is actually LED, not capacitor (slide 3, 4)
Looked like a good meeting!
Engineering news by Don (no slides)
CD-0 changed the situation.
Manpower of engineering for integration of tracker is lacking. John
Brodowski has been working on TPC part of this engineering, but he is
retiring. Trying to hire a person from Magnet division.
Integrating MAPS and INTT has been an issue. How to read out the signal
is not clear (Tony)
Already talked to Ed, and got some ideas (Don). Common cooling system
for MAPS and INTT is ideal (Don)
Readout of MAPS at one end and INTT from the other end will be an
option. The experts are looking at it (Tony)
Outer and inner HCal is going fine but needs more engineering. EMCal has
still in question like how to fit the light guide. etc.
Carriage itself and support structure is being worked. Jim Mills is
leading this effort. The Magnet test is also taken care of by Jim Mills.
The test will be performed around March or April (late winter or Spring
break).
CD-1 review will be held in the late Spring, or around early Summer.
Internal preview will be in Jan and Feb (Internal sPHENIX review). The
ALD level preview (Dress rehearsal) will be held around April-May.
June-July will be the CD-1 review dates. Shooting CD-1 approval before
the current FY.
Excellent progress on R&R of PHENIX. Good support by C-AD. East Carriage
tower will be cut down in two weeks. South magnet will come out to hall
then. MPC and MPC-EX should come off by then. Central magnet will be off
in hall. Have the east carriage gone is almost done. 50-50 chance to
finish all of them by the end of year.
MAPS proposal update by Ming
Some issue on phone, but recovered
Detail report on the progress and plan. No discussion/questions.
Concerns were expressed about the date of the collaboration meeting in
December. That week and the week before guarantee a collision with
University finals weeks. We should plan future Collaboration meetings
to avoid this.
