sPHENIX general meeting, 2018-04-0
=========================
(minutes compiled by Stefan)
attendance: peaked at 40
collaboration news--Gunther (see slides)
------------------------
lots of positive developments:
meeting with ALD: budget
- congress passed budget for FY18
- 10 % increase for nuclear physics
- expectations for FY19 also positive
What does that mean for sPHENIX?
- meeting with ALD on MVTX (3/27)
- ALD discussed bringing MVTX back after OPA review
- funding largely through RHIC operations (as MIE)
- time constraints
- ALICE version 1.5 years before ours
- would be beneficial to be part of that production
- next step: ALD will seak verbal agreement from DOE to commit $1M for
Readout Unit (RU) and stave production
Timely MVTX workfest at MIT April 30 - May 1
- still space available for more participants
Discussion
- Jamie: any discussion on bringing back inner HCal
- Gunther: not discussed, will need to pursue in the future
- after meeting in China on EMCal (hoping this meeting will solve EMCal)
- MVTX was highest priority to bring back
- Gunther: no impact on OPA review
ALD discussions continuted: LOI
- charge for updating sPHENIX and EIC LOI
- ALD agreed with charge that had been agreed upon with cold QCD group
- leadership combination of sPHENIX and outsiders interested in EIC
- presentation at PAC meeting
- 9/30 deadline
Collaborative Tools
- Tom Throwe now heading new RACF group with title "Services and Tools"
- hope that collaborative tools will be brought up to speed
- asking for input from collboration
Software and computing review
- June 18
- chaired by Torre Wenaus
- challenging since committee used to LHC standards
- requires combined effort from computing, tracking, and project experts
- run plan needs to be factored in
- uncertainty of factor ~ 5 in computing needs to be sorted out before review
- Martin points out that there are multiple conflicts
- Gunther advises to prioritize (date set)
Upcoming conferences
- Itaru: DIS
- John L.: ISMD
- Yongsun doubly subscribed: QM
- need EMCal poster presenter
- RBRC workshop on definition of jets 5/25-27
- need representation
- RHIC users meeting
- need sPHENIX plenary talk presenter
- nice occation to convey reality of sPHENIX to broader community
project news--Ed (no slides)
--------------
- didn't have chance to prepare slides
- prepared agenda for OPA review
-will send to DOE today
- skipping infrastructure (as opposed to director's review)
- order outer HCal steel ($5.5M)
- satisfied committee
- triggered rapid progress on assembly
- waiting for vendor; expect ~ 5 % increase in cost
- then will finalize with BNL
- will place order next week
- had frozen ability to order < $100k orders
- now budget: UIUC can go ahead to produce EMCal blocks
- by Monday this can go ahead
- $300k fiber order moving ahead
- working through recommendations from director's review
- dress rehearsal for OPA review May 8, 9
- intro talks due May 2
- rather large list of R&D tasks to be completed in next 12-18 months
- now with budget this should proceed on schedule
- summary: on track for
- discussion
- Dave: have committee for OPA review? Yes.
- Gunther: designated person for physics case?
- Patty McBride (head of physics division at FNAL)
- Ed will send list of committee members to Gunther
- Dave: unified report? Yes.
- Christine: timeline?
- September
- not critical; have money for R&D through next 18 months
- only CD3-A critical; will need to wait for FY19 budget
- expect FY19 CR
- Gunther: interal rehearsals before rehearsal?
- Ed: in particular message of Ed's and Gunther's talks should be coordinated (feedback from director's review)
test beam--John H. (shared slides, not on agenda)
----------------
- were able to achieve fraction of goals
- EMCal position scan
- some of energy scan
- significant amount of HCal-only running and tile mapper scans
- some problems with EMCal
- slowed us down
- traced down to normal (low) gain amplifier
- Steve Boose implemented fix (but also problem with cross talk and slewing)
- was somewhat marginal and temperature dependent
- need to complete beam test btw. June 13-July 4; final date not set yet
- may involve shipping EMCal back for a few days in May
- Dave: size of crew needed for continuation of test beam?
- John: good opportunity for students (summer break)
Christine N.: register by 5/15 for jet workshop
--------------------------------------
Jet performance plots for OPA review--Dennis (see slide)
-------------------------------------
- presented suggested performance plots at last meeting
- progress, but no draft plots for this meeting
- expect regular updates in simulations meetings
- expect draft plots by next GM
- simulations include all EMCal towers; handle eta<0.85 boundary with offline fiducial cut
- similar for HCal: iHCal present in simulations, but won't be read out for analysis
- but can be to answer questions regarding restored scope
- simulations team coordinates centralized production of AuAu backgrounds
- then individual analyzers can embed signal
- additional volunteers welcome
- discussion:
- Ron S.: organizational question: status of jet topical WG
- Dennis: group not being disbanded, but at the moment subsumed into simulations meeting
- Ron: suggestion: move email thread to topical group rather than simulations group
- Gunther agrees
- Gunther: ask Aaron for input on plan
- John H.: need set of plots by April 27; otherwise too late for CDR
- Dennis: matches proposed time line to have draft plots by April 20
Cold QCD update and path towards sPHENIX@EIC LOI--Christine A. (see slides)
------------------------------------------------------
- main activity for past months of Cold QCD topical group was on updating LOI
- have finalized charge as of yesterday
- important point: external participation
- makes it easier for external people to committ
- important differences since last LOI 2014
- detector and collaboration much better defined
- Geant4 infrastructure developed for at various levels for beyond-baseline detectors
- strategy to demonstrate physics capabilities
- Geant simulations
- event generator studies
- meetings Monday nights at 8:30
- lot of activities; but a lot remains to be done
- organize manpower around focus groups
- generator-level studies of ep and eA collisions
- Geant4 EMCal
- Geant4 hadron PID
- Geant4 tracking, displaced vertices, jets
- on Monday Jin gave talk on reusing sPHENIX DAQ for EIC detector
- designed for AuAu
- data volume smaller at EIC even if event rate higher
- need close interaction with sPHENIX groups: tracking, jet structure, HF, quarkonium, simulations
- more volunteers welcome (get in touch with Christine and Nils)
- asked Berndt to change structure from task force to detector study group
- such that group can naturally evolve in the future
discussion:
- Nils: need to find someone who works on figuring out where to put detectors in realistic engineering implementation (as opposed to just Geant implementation)
- Chris: central part Geant implementation is very close to engineering
- Geant volumes include air space for cables
- Jin: cables eta >1.1 (outside of enclosure box) not implemented
- Stefan: proposal to implement enclosure boxes for forward/backward detectors
in sPHENIX engineering (and Geant) to flag future space conflicts
- Chris: official sPHENIX accounts now available
- but any rcf account will do
- Dave: should coordinate with the Collaboration Tools group
