Hello all,

Overall the proposal reads quite well - I have attached my full comments as a txt file as well as a png to illustrate a strange thing in one of the figures (txt file has details).

Thanks!
Chris

Subject: [Sphenix-l] Draft sPHENIX Beam Use Proposal document for Collaboration Comment (comment deadline Tuesday, August 25, 2020)

Hello sPHENIXians,

As discussed at the sPHENIX Fortnightly Meeting today, the sPHENIX BUP Taskforce is sending around the draft BUP Document -- it is linked on Indico below.

The document is essentially complete with a few places with red text to indicate that a figure needs updating or a reference is missing.    Comments by line number will be most appreciated.   The more constructive and specific the comments (i.e. feel free to suggest specific re-writing or specific figure changes), the better since time is short and we want to produce the best document we can.   There was a lot of good discussion about the option for pp running in Year-1 (2023).    Specific suggestions for how to reference or modify this discussion - currently in Chapter 5 on Commissioning - are most welcome.

Deadline for comments is close of business on Tuesday, August 25, 2020.    That gives the Taskforce sufficient time to take input seriously and improve the document before the submission deadline of August 31, 2020.
Comments can be sent directly as responses to this email on the list.   If you want to discuss some points in more detail in person, feel free to reach out to me or any of the Taskforce members

Sincerely,

Jamie, for the sPHENIX BUP Taskforce (Sasha Bazilevsky, John Haggerty, Jin Huang, Dennis Perepelitsa, ex-officio Dave Morrison, Gunther Roland)

Notes on sPHENIX Beam Use Proposal (Version as of 2020.08.21, first release
outside of committee)

Table 1:
* I assume the parentheticals under cryo weeks, physics weeks, and
luminosity are either an understood format for beams or an alternative beam
scenario - in either case maybe a short line in the caption explaining them
as I do not know what the meaning is.

L42-43:
* "[...] - in particular it is the most perfect liquid known." Awk phrasing
maybe try "[...] - in particular of known matter it exhibits properties most
alike a perfect liquid."?

Fig 1.1:
* I see a strange empty box on the bottom right corner of this figure, below
that detector - perhaps just an issue in my pdf but I will attach a
screenshot (remind me if I forget the screenshot)

L79:
* "[...] and for selected observables in [Chris: just a lowercase a w/ a
circlue above it]," - > think you just want A+A or Au+Au here

L93-97:
* I think this might be overselling the kinematic overlap with the LHC from
the jet side of things - perhaps an example measurement or two to clarify
what you have in mind?

L233:
* This answers my question about Table 1 - I would just copy-paste sentence
"The numbers..." starting on 233 and adding it to table 1 caption.

L279:
* Maybe just because its a draft or how I accessed but the link is broken
for clicking
* Already updated to Aug 21 as of Aug 24, and based on the info you give
there is no clear way to access the previous version

L300:
* So every year has 6 weeks minimum for ramp-up and rampdown + then 2.5 more
lost weeks for a species switch? So the loss that p+p every year plans gives
is 2.5 weeks per year?

* Why is the lumi ramp-up limited to 25% per week? Is that a hard-limit or
self-imposed?

L353:
* Same comment as before - this document is already updated and it is not
clear how to access previous versions

Fig 4.1:
* Caption typo "20278" -> "2028"

L395-396:
* Any feedback from Aaron on how this impacts some of the calorimeter
calibration issues w/ radiation damage?

L522:
* Since its read I'll assume you know, but citation fix is needed.

L529:
* Typo "hadroincally" -> "hadronically"

L531:
* Typo "all minimum biased" -> "all minimum bias"

L535:
* Typo "in additional to the" -> "in addition to the"

L560-565:
* As part of an open dataset? Or is this only applicable if sPHENIX is
repurposed for EIC?

Figure 8.1: Why no overlay for the xjg here? I flipped back and forth between
the one in the main body and the one on the right hand side here, I think it
actually seems to be a nice improvement. Was it the improvement not obvious
when you did overlay, or was it just never overlaid?
