Hi,
I heard some collaborators may benefit from some news/information … Let me give it a try here.
Yesterday, as the fire-retardant paint didn’t arrive as we have been waiting since last week, we have had 6 BNL (union) carpenters move the wooden planks out of the 1008-IR. This way, we remove the “combustible” materials/safe-hazard in the IR. But we plan to paint those wooden planks after the paint arrive and re-install the planks so that collaborators may get access to the inner parts of the sPHENIX Detector.
This is of course due to the fact that the fire-protection experts said that those wooden planks inside the IR (interaction region) is a fire safety issue, during the walkthrough of ESRC (Experimental Safety Review Committee)/ORE (Operation Readiness Evaluation) on Apr. 24, 2023. ( We can either take out the planks or paint the planks with fire-retardant paint. )
Yesterday afternoon, I took pictures of the empty scaffolding structure immediately after the planks were taken out. Cindy Galdamez, the lady who has been in charge of our getting approval from the Internal Readiness Review (IRR), immediately sent it to ESRC for confirmation and then passed on to the IRR committee for approval. In fact, while we’re completing 16 pre-start items of the walkthrough, Cindy has been preparing ESRC/IRR for the progress. They all knew that we were waiting for the paint 😊
Hoping that taking the planks out resolves the final obstacle is pre-mature --- just like what we have experienced in the last couple months. One of the members of the ORE team is a relatively new electrical inspector at BNL, Alex Tulio. He’s given us a long list of works that need to be corrected or improved. Two of them were considered as “pre-start” items.
It’s related to “Electrical Material Installation Inspection” (EMII). The Chair of IRR, Bob Lee, states that he will approve the IRR only if Alex is happy, so to speak.
We’ve just had a discussion with Bob Lee and others. We’re going to submit a package to Alex Tulio (who is on travel but has promised to check emails etc.) to prove to him that indeed those were the old equipment installed ~20 years ago and old equipment don’t need to be re-inspected with the present codes.
So, we have to wait for this. If IRR approves, it will be passed to Mike Clancy at BNL and if he agrees, it’ll be passed to our Asso. Lab. Director H. Gao who can requested operation approval from the DOE Site Office.
In the meantime, it seems that we’ve finally got hold of the paint 😊
