Pasquale, Wesley, and Mike,

I have attached some slides from Paul Kovach about the work they've done in the Superconducting Magnet Division about shipping the BaBar solenoid to BNL which we plan to review this Wednesday, July 30. Because you three have so much experience and history with the solenoid, I would like your input on whether the magnet is ready to ship here, and whether there are any additional precautions we should take before we set a ship date. I would ask you to plan to summarize your findings, comments, and recommendations either collectively or individually in email(s) to me afterward so we could consider whether we should take any additional precautions.

BNL is now paying for BlueJeans videoconferencing, which you should be able to connect to without any special hardware or software (although you will need a decent network connection). If there are problems with the connection, call or message me on skype (johnstonyb) and we'll move to that. The meeting is

11am EDT
8am PDT
5pm CEST

and I have the start a little bit earlier in case of connection problems; I think the meeting will be about an hour or perhaps a little more.

July 30th at 17:00 is fine with me.
I suppose we will use skype.

Pasquale,

I think I've touched base with everyone who should hear about this;
Mike Anerella unfortunately is out the week of July 28, but Paul
Kovach can do the presentation.

Paul, if you can put some slides together by next Friday, July 25,
that will let them think about it in advance.

I suggest we try for sometime on Wednesday, July 30, and if something
comes up, we can shift a day later.

The time... difficult to accomodate all nine time zones; the best I
can see would be 8am at SLAC, 11am at BNL, and 5pm in Italy. Would
that work?

In the other two weeks I will be in vacation.
However if you have material (slides, reports, ..),
which can be circulated I can read and comment
in any case.

Best regards

Pasquale

Pasquale, Wesley, and Mike,

I hope you're having a good summer--I'd like to see if we can
interrupt it for a couple of hours for you to look at what my
colleagues in the Magnet Division and I are envisioning for shipping
the BaBar solenoid to Brookhaven. We are hoping we can complete our
arrangements in this fiscal year (i.e., to ship at least the solenoid
itself before October 1), and I think we're on track for that, but I
think we should take a step back and discuss our plans to make sure
they make sense to you. A recent science review of the project was
quite positive, and we think we can proceed with the next steps in
shipping and testing the magnet.

Of course, finding a time in mid-summer to do that is always
problematical. We may have to resort to a doodle poll, but as a
start, is there any time in the weeks of July 28, August 4, or August
11 that you could reserve around 2 hours for an engineering evaluation
of our plans?

Thanks very much in advance for your past, and hopefully future,
willingness to help us with this.
