Hi,
During today’s meeting, I mentioned the following paper in the meeting and now I can show it to you : https://collab.external.bnl.gov/sites/sPHENIX-Magnet/Shared%20Documents/BaBar%20Documents/Availability%20and%20Failure%20Modes%20of%20the%20BaBar%20Superconducting%20Solenoid.pdf ( which I uploaded on May 15, 2015, > a year ago).
On PDF p.3 (marked p.2 in the paper): it said under “F. Strain Gauge” :
Strain gages are mounted on the magnet support structure to monitor unusual stresses or deformations. This is a software interlock that will cause the magnet to ramp down if tripped. So far, all trips have been due to strain gage failures and not actual structural problems.
and then on the same page in the next column under “B. Alteration of the Strain Gage Interlock”, they said:
“…. We have altered this interlock so that it will only prevent the magnet current from being ramped up but will have no effect on the magnet once it is at full current. This has eliminated all strain gage trips. “
You can read … it’s “funny” to me.
( I actually discussed about this paper on Apr. 21, 2016 : https://lists.bnl.gov/mailman/private/sphenix-magnet-l/2016/000399.html )
