Hello Paul Giannotti,
Nobody has responded to your questions related to placements of the voltage taps. So, I just called Piyush Joshi and decided to run to his office. I originally thought it might be just a “it’s OK” … But after I showed your locations with the voltage taps, he pointed out that it’s not quite right.
I draw a couple pictures in the attached powerpoint to illustrate what Prof. Joshi has taught me J
In your model that you showed us in the meeting on Jan. 4, 2017, you’ve placed the voltage taps right on the overlapped portions of the joints. According to Prof. Joshi (etc.), you should put one voltage tap just off the overlap of the joint on one side and another one also off the overlap on another side of the joint. This way, you can measure the voltage (V1-V2) and therefore resistance across the entire joint. Please see the powerpoint as my words probably won’t make you understand.
Maybe, you can talk to Piyush (who has almost finished his LARG magnet training … reaching 19k A with a target of >20kA) and Carl Schultheiss who is responsible for the data acquisition and quench detection etc. Maybe, Carl can comment on this ….
