Hi,

So far, Piyush has told me :

“For cryogenic temperature (4.2K) all instrumentation wires has to be  double insulation with Kapton as inner layer and Tefzel as outer layer.”

And Bob Lambiase said:

We’ve successfully used Tefzel in RHIC in almost every case, but we had a problem with one color – green.

While the other colors were good, the green insulation cracked severely.

Some greens are ok.  While the other colors were good, the green insulation cracked severely.

Some greens are ok. I’ll attach the letter Chromatics sent me after we had a discussion on this.

This is twenty years ago, so I don’t know if organic pigments are still used. “

Kin,

For cryogenic temperature (4.2K) all instrumentation wires has to be  double insulation with Kapton as inner layer and Tefzel as outer layer. When Sonny or anyone from magnet division will do the voltage tap wiring they will use the correct wires so don’t worry and tell Paul, no need to buy those wires we have them.

Regards,

Piyush

Hi Paul Giannotti,

I can't find you on the phone ... and so I use email again ...

Carl Schultheiss was just in my office and I showed him (and essentially "forced him" to look at) your cable specification, he wondered whether those
PVC jacket can deal with cold temperature ??!!!

At the bottom of the cable specification that you've sent, it said:

"Temperature range of -35 ° C to + 105 ° C (SR-PVC) and -30 ° C to + 105 ° C (PVC)"

Those cables go through the Extension and though they're not at 4K, they're in the insulating vacuum outside the superconducting bus or so ..., they
must be very cold, much lower than -35 ° C ?!

Carl said maybe TEFZEL stuff can be used ... ??

Kin

Hi Kin,

Yes. I met with the Cryo guys (Tom Tallerico, Len Masi, and Rich Meyer) last week. We decided on a 20 conductor, 22AWG, overall foil shield, PVC jacket cable made by Alpha Wire. See attached manufacturer’s data sheet. They have enough cable in their in house BNL inventory to cover the required extension cables needed to be made. This will involve soldering the ends to new D connectors.

Regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Have you guys settled on the cables and connectors to use ?
