Hi,

Thanks Roberto and Jim a lot for taking trouble to explain to me ~8000 miles away.  I put their explanations below and cc: to our mailing list for the record. I also attach Roberto's photo.

I understand that they will do the described work tomorrow morning.

As Jim suggested, I keep my fingers crossed. 😀

Roberto:

It is as the round flange connection into the doghouse that goes to valvebox.
So it is outside the flux return.
We reviewed this afternoon, and will separate the flanges by 0.25 inch [it is a 5/32 inch o-ring]
to check the o-ring. It is a spliced o-ring, because the o-ring was put in after the assembly.
There is sufficient room inside the vacuum space and slack on the piping and bus.
Loosen the bolts and see how it pushes or wants to move.
WE will put the shims back in to support the extension.

======= ======= ======= =======
Jim:

The various sections have all been leak-checked independently.  The joint in question was made up, but not leak-checked until now.  We will make the proposed repair as Roberto describes below, tomorrow.  If it doesn’t appear to be the o-ring we will meet to talk about the plan forward…keep your fingers crossed…

So we track down the location of the leak.

It is along the flange joint of the circular flange.

The plan is to unbolt and try to get a ¼ inch separation and check the o-ring.

It is a large leak of order 100 Torr/L-s.

If we want to meet to discuss what to do next.

Thanks, Roberto
