Hi,

Wuzheng has done some additional eddy current simulation/calculation due to some question(s) about the eddy current in the IHCAL.

I’ve updated the sPHENIX docdb of the slide collection of his works/results here :

https://docdb.sphenix.bnl.gov/cgi-bin/private/ShowDocument?docid=224

I include below the last reply from Wuzheng when people ask why it’s so small :

================================================

You are right on the magnitude of eddy current. From the contour plot, the maximum current density is ~ 2..68 A/cm^2, which is very small.

Before doing this simulation, I tried some hand calculation; but was not successful, because the radial component of main field varies a lot, it was hard to do by hand integral.

In my work career, I was always asked to calculate eddy current forces. The largest was the eddy current force in SC coil mandrel; the smallest thing was on the metal coating on the inner surface of a ceramic vacuum pipe. It seems to me nothing was significant; however, we are pushed by the safety people. We are always questioned.

It may look like a sentence or two from Wuzheng’s memoir 😊 😊 😊 But it also reminds me when people ask me questions when the radiation from my simulation

is smaller or higher than people’s expectation 😊

Furthermore, I’ve also added to Wuzheng’s document folder (in our sPHENIX-Magnet site) :

https://collab.external.bnl.gov/sites/sPHENIX-Magnet/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2Fsites%2FsPHENIX%2DMagnet%2FShared%20Documents%2FDr%2E%20Meng%20Wuzheng%27s%20calculations

The above “SharePoint 2010” stuff will be moved into the new SharePoint (as ITD told me … and “Microsoft will no longer be supporting SharePoint 2010 after June 30th this year.”.

I’ll let you know of the new address when it’s done.

Kin
