Hello Carl,

We have made things simpler and simpler in the last 24 hours...

Let's talk about this with Joel in a meeting that he's going to set up.  He is thinking that he may also get an OK signal from you or Pablo.  In the meeting, we can see whether any box is necessary.

If we are going into the PLC on the power supply, the cables go directly to the PLC.

I don’t see the need for an enclosure, perhaps I don’t understand what Joel is proposing.

I thought the buttons would connect, through cables, directly to the PLC. Nothing else would be

required.

Subject: [Sphenix-magnet-l] a preliminary walkthrough by LESHC PCSS ... the coldbox in 1008B ... Joel's interface box

Hi,

  1. This morning sometime after 8:15 am, there were some members of the PCSS (Pressure & Cryogenic Safety Subcommitee)

of LESHC (Lab. Environment, Safety and Health Committee) including J. Tuozzolo, M. Cubillo, M. Gaffney and Roberto Than gathering

at 1008B (inside and outside) inspect the sPHENIX Magnet Cryogenic System along with Paul Orfin, R. Michnoff, D. Chan and myself.   Paul

and Roberto were the persons who explained whereas others asked questions.

I took a picture of this new coldbox (part of the ~1.6 Million contract for the AET) sitting next to the two existing Blue & Yellow coldboxes of RHIC):

jpg icon 2021-9-22 coldbox in 1008B.jpg   This is the first time that I’ve physically seen/touched it (though I went to 1008B mezzanine many times).

This “walkthrough” came about when we’re arranging a review of the Magnet Cryo system by the PCSS (since the last review in Dec. 2018) and

Joe (the Chair) wanted to take a look.

In addition to checking out the coldbox inside 1008B, we also went to the grassland between 1008B and 1008 to look at the piping near the West penetration.   This was

also the first time I wore Tyvek suit following Paul’s advice.  ( Most people just used the sprays on their trousers … )

  1. I’ve had some discussion with Joel Vasquez of sPHENIX in the last 24 hours   There was a meeting a month or two ago.   But after my discussion with Joel, I realized something that people didn’t understand

in the past.   Joel saw some old schematic diagrams for the old PHENIX magnet and there were things like “trips” which would shut off the magnet.   But now, (I told them that) we have the quench-detection system
which would shut off the Magnet (fast-discharge) if there is anything wrong (temperature rise, big current fluctuation, …).

At the end, there is only a need for a crash-button/emergency-off signal sent to the PLC’s --- Programmable Logic Controller --- (of Pablo Rosas) to shut off the Magnet.  ( Carl Schultheiss’ quench-detectors take care of the rest. )

In the attached picture, Joel draws where he’d like to put his “interface” box (which gets the signals from the 1008 IR and eventually connect to the PLC of the Magnet).  I believe that space is un-used as they are near the
panels (power, switch …) for the old PHENIX magnets.   Please let me know if you know something different.

Kin
