Subject: RE: Walk through of sPHENIX Cryo system at 1008b
There was a PCSS walkthrough of the SPHENIX building 1008B and the outside area to see the progress of the new SPHENIX cryogenic supply system for its superconduction solenoid coil.
From the committee: J. Tuozzolo, Mario Cubillo, Mike Gaffney, and Roberto Than
Paul Orfin and Roberto Than are the responsible CAD engineers for the new installation and led the tour.
Guests: Kin Yip, David Chan, Robert Michnoff, Robert Karl from CAD.
The new installation inspected included:
A new valve box that will provide 4.5 K and heat shield helium to the “new” SPHENIX superconducting solenoid in the RHIC Interaction Region (IR) experimental building.Helium taps into the existing RHIC blue valve box for the new SPHENIX valve box: two supply taps - one from the RHIC magnet line and one from the RHIC heat shield line and one return tap (not sure which line in the blue valve box it returns to).Vacuum Jacketed helium transfer lines from the valve box to the IR tunnel entrance.A warm helium return line from the new valve box to the RHIC helium gas warm return line. Being installed.
General Comments: (Thanks to the committee members present and Paul Orfin for their input on the following).
Overall the progress is very good and in accordance with information presented in the 2018 review. The entire area was clean and well organized. Well done. The new valve box is ASME code compliant. It is fully installed “mechanically”. Wiring and labeling still needs to be done. The valve box will be made operational in time for SPHENIX superconducting solenoid/magnet testing in May/June 2022.All of the Helium taps/piping between the RHIC blue valve box and the new SPHENIX valve box are fully installed with BNL welders working under ASME code standards. All welds have been inspected and documented and all of the connections have been leak and
pressure tested. The new taps and new valve box are now part of the larger RHIC cryogenic Helium system. The new valve box will not be used for cooling during the upcoming RHIC beam run. The control valves in the new valve box will be used to isolate the RHIC system from
the rest of the new SPHENIX supply system installation. Those control valves shall be LOTO’d properly (mechanically locked closed, appropriately tagged, and documented in accordance with a proper lock out procedure) before the system is pressurized for the
start of the RHIC refrigerator and distribution system operations. It was noted that the vacuum jacket pipe to the IR08 tunnel was fully connected to the new valve box. It was recommended that the end of helium lines valves and/or caps should be LOTO’d as well. This is a precaution to these pipes being pressurized if
the LOTO’d valves in the valve box have some leak by.The new valve box has Helium process line relief valves for the internal piping. The exhaust of these relief valves must be routed to the outside of 1008B as defined in the approved RHIC Interface P&ID drawing 31050054. This part of the installation has
not been completed yet and should be completed as soon as possible. The building is ODH monitored and the leak rate past the LOTO’d valves would be small so this action item is not be a pre-condition for RHIC refrigerator operations start for the 2022 run.
It is a requirement before the SPHENIX solenoid cryogenic system operation. It was noted that one of the new vacuum jacketed tap lines had a vacuum roughing valve with a cap. In discuss it was learned that the vacuum jacketed line was common with the much larger RHIC blue valve box insulating vacuum. It was recommended that a
“do not operate” tag be attached to that valve since it could be mistaken for a much smaller vacuum volume pump out in the future.
Action Items: (for Paul Orfin representing the CAD cryogenics group).
LOTO valves on the 1008B valvebox (mechanically locked closed, appropriately tagged, and documented in accordance with a proper lock out procedure) before the system is pressurize for the start of the RHIC refrigerator and distribution system operations.LOTO the ball valve at WR line tap.LOTO bayonet ball valves inside IR Hall on west wall platform.Tag the vacuum pumpout valve on one of 3 the cryolines interconnects between RHIC valvebox and new valvesbox with a "do not operate” tag attached to that valve.New 1008B SPHENIX valvebox reliefs will be piped out of the building before utilizing the new valve box for SPHENIX SC solenoid operations. This can be done after RHIC refrigerator start-up.
