Hello,
I’ve put 2 photos of the CERN Team in front of the mapper taken by Frank Toldo from the lift here (together with another photo that I took on the floor at a poor but different angle) :
( Frank also helped Ed or Ed’s phone take a couple more photos which I don’t have. )
From Frank’s photos, people can see that the ends of the mapper arms are almost touching the EMCAL (Electromagnetic Calorimeter). Of course, we did/do this to try to map as much volume inside the Magnet as possible.
This is why one might not be surprised that Wed. morning (Nov. 9), the mapper was stopped by an EMCAL module when that module near the bottom stuck out a couple mm near the “Northern” end. I saw Raphael and Francois do quite a bit of shimming or polishing the ends of the mapper, trying to get rid of a mm or so, so that the mapper wouldn’t scratch the EMCAL and be stopped.
Wuzheng Meng asked me about this and I think a picture or two are better than my poor words in explanation. The mapper was not stopped before during our coarse measurements because that particular spot (z) was skipped as the mapper would rotate 180 degrees only at every 10 cm apart (coarse), instead of every 2 cm apart (fine). And there are gaps at the top and bottom where there is no EMCAL nor rails installed.
