Hello, Roberto,

Thank you very much for finding a solution to try to keep the Magnet ~100K.    Is this leak the “leak” in RHIC (that has caused you ~$1.4 M during the 2024 run) ?

I guess before you can complete this installation.  The Magnet temperature will drift up little by little.

Kin

Subject: SPHENIX LN2 EXCHANGER LEAK and replacement

Everyone,

Heads up.

Starting the Nitrogen cooling for sPHENIX: We were not able to hold charge in the circulation loop. There seems to be a leak in the N2/He exchanger.

To be able to keep the magnet at 100K, I have a possible solution.

We have a LN2 bath cooler dewar that can cool helium gas, currently in 912 bldg.

Need to modify the circuits up in the platform.

Need to find/get hold of a mating bayonet so I can make a line to get the LN2 supply main. The last section of LN2 line is bayonetted, so I can make up a new feed to the gas cooler dewar.

USI

Marked up P&ID drawings.

RIGGING WORK PERMIT PLAN

Lift 200L dewar to platform level.

CRYO WORK PERMIT

Marked up P&ID drawings for LOTO valves

LOTO LN2 supply lines

LOTO Helium valve so we can tee in helium supply out and cold gas in.

120V extension cord to power the level controller and solenoid valve for  LN2 bath cooler.

Fluid Circuits:

LN2 supply line: End 1: Mating male bayonet === End2: compression fitting to dewar.

The helium circulation supply I can take of a relief turret, by putting in a tee.

The helium circulation cold gas (90K) I can take also enter the solenoid via a relief turret, by putting in a tee also.

Warm helium gas line: SS braided flexline 1/2" NPS or larger

Cold helium gas line: SS Vacuum jacketed braided flexline 1/2" NPS or larger.

300K helium gas tap into tee for relief H3663R (Heater outlet)

Connection to gas cooler dewar inlet.==>

80K Gas out of dewar: Need a VJ flex line / mech insulated flex.==>

The 80K helium gas into solenoid would tap into tee for relief H3657R= warm gas supply after the warm gas valve H3611A.

N2 gas vent: Need to pipe it into the vent header somehow.

Remove the first bayoneted section and close off the exchanger vent N3250M.

Tie-in the Gas cooler vent to the permanent vent header: Bayonet connection.
