Hi all,

Quick update on Fermilab test beam status – still uncertain, but we do have a plan at least.

  • In the case Fof ermilab running TB in May, a good likelihood for us to take TB in the week of May 20 (as we discussed at yesterday’s MVTX meeting).
  • Early training, safety review possible

See email discussions below for details. Stay tuned.

Cheers,

Ming

Dear Mandy,

That sounds very good!

Yes, TB with 120GeV is our primary goal.

Cheers,

Ming

Hi Ming,

Yes, I will make sure to arrange training depending on the beam schedule. As long as I have the list of people from you who need training, we’ll make sure to take care of that.

Yes, ATLAS and CMS are both in MT6.1. They use 120 GeV protons, I believe you wanted that, as well as some secondary beam, is that correct? ATLAS will be happy to help share time.

If we move to the 5 days on, 9 days off, I will plan for all users (not just you guys, but everyone) to install and do their safety inspections during the off period, as well as the trainings. I would also like to see everyone test their DAQ as much as possible, because that is often a problem.  Please don’t worry about contacting the safety inspectors or the people doing the training. I have them in the loop and that is something I will arrange when necessary.

I will keep you in the loop once I hear more.

Thanks,

Mandy

Hi Mandy,

Thanks for the information. I keep optimistic and stay with the current plan to run the sPHENIX MVTX telescope in the week of May 20.

In this case, we could move all the trainings, safety review and setting  up the telescope to the week of May 13. Could training be arranged for May 16 (Thur)?

Also, it seems both ATLAS and CMS are going to use the room MT6.1, we could also consider to run parasitically if possible with them using MT6.2 (our planed location).

Cheers,

Ming

Subject: Update on Test Beam

Hi Everyone,

I know John was communicating with you about issues at the test beam, I wanted to reach out to let you know what I know.

So, the lab is running out of funds to operate the accelerator. This affects the test beam, as well as the rest of complex (NOvA, gm2, etc). As it stands, we do not have enough money to run to July 2 when the accelerator would shut  down for the summer. This only affects things this fiscal year (May and June), but it might also affect things that happen in the fall as well.

I have an infuriatingly large amount of uncertainty in exactly what will happen. The scenarios are as follows:

  1. They just decide to shut the whole place down. No beam after May 13th. Not much we can do in this situation.
  2. They figure out how to fund us to July. Perfect, no need to reschedule anything.
  3. The one plan I heard was we run for 5 days on (24 hours per day), starting May 6th. Then turn off the complex for 9 days (weekend – work week- following weekend all off).

In that last scenario, I would try to get you 5 days during your previously scheduled time. But you will not get the full 2-3 weeks that had been requested. I had you guys down for May 20, but now, even that is uncertain, since we don’t know if the May 6th date will hold. And it likely will not hold, and we won’t implement anything until May 13th.

This is an insane position to be in. I cannot believe we’re this much in the dark. We are supposed to get a hint of a plan by April 24th (next Wednesday). Even then, it might not be definite.

At the moment, I can’t advise you on what to do. I want you to have this information so you can decide how you want to proceed. If you have any funding dependent on running sometime in the next few months, it would be helpful to know.

I very much I had a definite plan to give you. I will let you know when I know more. If you can come any earlier, like the first part of May, we might be able to  squeeze you in. I have other users, so I can’t promise 24 hours per day of running, but maybe we can get you something.

My cell is 360-969-9006, if you need to reach me.

Thanks,

Mandy
